The Super Falcons of Nigeria face their second, but already the biggest match of their WAFCON 2026 title defence when they take on Zambia's Copper Queens in a must-win Group C clash on Saturday, August 1, Soccernet.ng reports.

Kick-off is set for 9:00 p.m. Nigerian time at Al Medina Stadium in Rabat, and after two hours of sweat and toil, the Super Falcons should have a clear picture of where they are headed.

Justin Madugu's side arrive under serious pressure after a shock 3-2 opening defeat to WAFCON debutants Malawi, a result that ended Nigeria's long unbeaten record against tournament newcomers and left the defending champions with almost no margin for error.

Zambia, on the other hand, arrive full of confidence after a ruthless 6-0 demolition of Egypt in their first game, inspired by a four-goal haul from captain and talisman Barbra Banda.

Key Battles

Barbra Banda vs Nigeria's Defence

Nigeria's backline already looked vulnerable to quick transitions against Malawi, and Banda is exactly the kind of forward who punishes exactly that kind of weakness. Her combination of pace, power and finishing makes her the single biggest threat on the pitch, and how Nigeria's centre-backs cope with her early will likely define the entire match.

Nigeria will need more than just defensive solidity — they need goals. With Ajibade captaining the side and former African Footballer of the Year nominee Okoronkwo leading the line, Nigeria's ability to create and convert chances against a Zambia defence that has looked comfortable so far will be just as important as shutting Banda down.

Midfield Control

Nigeria's midfield struggled to protect the back line against Malawi, and a repeat of that will be fatal against a Zambia side with genuine attacking depth. Christy Ucheibe and Halimatu Ayinde will need a much-improved collective performance in the middle of the park to dictate the tempo of the game.

Head-to-head

Nigeria and Zambia have developed one of the most interesting rivalries in African women's football in recent years, but history remains firmly on the Super Falcons' side.

The two nations have met four times, with Nigeria winning three encounters and Zambia claiming one victory. Across those matches, the nine-time African champions have scored 15 goals while conceding just once.

The Super Falcons first faced the Copper Queens at the 2014 WAFCON, cruising to a commanding 6-0 victory before repeating the feat with a 4-0 win in the group stage of the 2018 edition.

Zambia finally ended Nigeria's dominance with a memorable 1-0 third-place play-off victory at the 2022 WAFCON, securing their first-ever medal at the tournament and a historic FIFA Women's World Cup qualification.

However, Nigeria emphatically restored the balance when the sides last met in the quarter-finals of the 2024 WAFCON, producing a ruthless 5-0 victory in Casablanca. Goals from Osinachi Ohale, Esther Okoronkwo, Chinwendu Ihezuo, Blessing Demehin and Folashade Ijamilusi sealed one of the Super Falcons' most dominant performances of the competition.

While recent history favours Nigeria, Zambia's emergence as a continental force means Saturday's meeting promises to be far more competitive than the overall head-to-head record suggests, with the Copper Queens eager to avenge last year's heavy defeat.

Team News

Nigeria remain without defender Ashleigh Plumptre, who misses the tournament entirely through injury. The bigger selection talking point heading into this game is in goal, with Chiamaka Nnadozie facing criticism after the Malawi defeat and some supporters calling for Comfort Erhabor to be given a chance to start.

Madugu has also spoken of taking a more “flexible approach” to try and get a positive result on Saturday, hinting at possible changes from the side that lost the opener.

Also, Zambia head into the match with no fresh injury concerns and a settled side full of confidence, with Banda joined in attack by Racheal Kundananji, Grace Chanda and Prisca Chilufya.

Prediction

Nigeria have dominated this fixture historically, including a 5-0 win at the last WAFCON, but this Zambia side is a different proposition to the one the Super Falcons have beaten comfortably in years past.

With their qualification hopes now hanging by a thread, expect Nigeria to come out with real urgency and take the game to Zambia rather than sit back and invite pressure — but containing Banda for a full 90 minutes will be the difference between keeping their title defence alive and a genuinely alarming early exit.

This will be a tight contest that could go either way. But with Nigeria's greater squad depth and experience in big occasions, they should be able to claim a 2-0 win..
