Real Betis are preparing a move for Super Eagles midfielder Christantus Uche as the Spanish club look to rescue one of Nigeria’s brightest young talents from a difficult spell in England, Soccernet.ng reports.

Reports in Spain via Fichajes say Betis are willing to offer around €15 million (close to ₦24 billion) to sign the 22-year-old from Getafe CF this summer. It is a move that could suit everybody involved.

Getafe need money because of La Liga’s strict financial regulations, while Uche desperately needs stability after an uncomfortable year at Crystal Palace.

Betis, meanwhile, see a player who already understands Spanish football and still has huge room for growth.

Only 12 months ago, Uche was one of the surprise stories of the Spanish season. After arriving from third-tier side AD Ceuta, few expected him to become such an important figure at Getafe under coach José Bordalás.

But the Nigerian adapted quickly to the aggressive and physical demands of Bordalás’ team. He scored on his La Liga debut against Athletic Bilbao and soon became one of Getafe’s most important players during the 2024/25 campaign.

Uche played 33 league matches, scored four goals and provided six assists as Getafe avoided relegation. His energy, pressing, aerial strength and ability to play in several positions made him one of the most exciting young players in Spain. At times, he played as a centre-forward, despite originally arriving as a midfielder.

His performances also earned him his first call-up to the Nigeria national football team, with many believing he was ready for a bigger stage. That opportunity appeared to arrive when Palace signed him on loan ahead of the 2025/26 season.

A difficult year in England and a second chance at Real Betis?

Instead of becoming the next Nigerian star in the Premier League, Uche found himself trapped on the fringes of the Palace squad under coach Oliver Glasner.

The tactical fit never looked comfortable. At Getafe, Uche had been the focal point of a direct and intense system. Palace, however, used a more structured 3-4-2-1 formation that demanded quick movement between the lines and rapid transitions. Glasner often viewed the Nigerian as a supporting attacking midfielder rather than the aggressive striker-like figure he had become in Spain.

The result was frustrating. All 14 of his Premier League appearances came from the bench, and he failed to score or register an assist in the competition. He managed only 158 league minutes across the season, a sharp contrast to the trust and responsibility he enjoyed in Spain.

There were brief flashes of promise in Europe, where he scored twice in the UEFA Conference League, but they were not enough to change his situation at Selhurst Park. By May, Palace had decided against activating the permanent transfer clause in his deal, meaning Uche would return to Getafe.

Now Real Betis believe they can offer him the fresh start he needs. Coach Manuel Pellegrini values intelligent and versatile footballers, and Uche’s ability to operate as a midfielder, support striker or forward could make him a valuable option for a squad expected to compete in Europe next season.

Betis are also a club with strong Nigerian history. The first Nigerian to wear the famous green-and-white shirt was Finidi George, who joined from AFC Ajax in 1996 after winning the Champions League. Others followed, including Victor Ikpeba, Sunny and Nosa Igiebor. If the move happens, Uche would become the fifth Nigerian player in Betis history.

A return to Spain could be the logical next step at exactly the right time for a player whose confidence has been shaken by a difficult year in England.

At Getafe he looked fearless, aggressive and full of personality. At Palace he looked unsure and disconnected. Betis are betting that the real Christantus Uche is still the one La Liga fans watched explode onto the scene just two seasons ago.
