Chelsea have officially confirmed Xabi Alonso as their new manager, handing the 44-year-old Spaniard a four-year contract that runs until 2030, Soccernet.ng reports.

The former Liverpool midfielder will officially begin work at Stamford Bridge on July 1, just weeks before the 2026-27 Premier League season begins.

The appointment comes after a painful and unstable campaign for the Blues. Chelsea are set to end the 2025-26 season in 9th place, missing out on European football and suffering a 1-0 defeat to Manchester City in the FA Cup final.

The club also went through major coaching changes, with Enzo Maresca and Liam Rosenior both leaving before interim boss Calum McFarlane finished the season. Now, Alonso is expected to rebuild Chelsea quickly if they are to challenge Arsenal and Manchester City for the Premier League title.

Alonso’s big mission at Stamford Bridge

Chelsea's new ‘manager' title for Alonso is important. Unlike previous head coaches, the former Bayer Leverkusen boss will have full control over tactics and a strong voice in transfers. He will work closely with sporting directors Paul Winstanley and Laurence Stewart to reshape the squad.

The plan is clearly to move away from a pure youth project and add proven, physically strong, and experienced players who can handle pressure in big matches.

Alonso’s immediate challenge is to turn a broken mid-table team into a title challenger within one season. The task of adding elite talent to the current Chelsea squad will be Alonso's first headache as Arsenal and Man City already start as favourites to go head-to-head again next season.

To be in the title race in 2027, Chelsea need a new spine: a goalkeeper, a strong defender, and a reliable striker. This is where three Super Eagles stars come into focus.

Nigerian stars who can immediately elevate Alonso's Chelsea

Chelsea have conceded 49 goals in 36 league games this term, that's at least 17 more than title-chasing Manchester City and Arsenal. Neither Robert Sánchez nor Filip Jørgensen has provided the elite shot-stopping or composure required for a title charge.

Alonso's system demands a keeper who is exceptional with his feet but reliable under aerial pressure and Udinese's Maduka Okoye could be the answer.

The 26-year-old has been outstanding for Udinese in the 2025-26 Serie A season. He kept 10 clean sheets in 28 matches and conceded just 25 goals. His save rate of about 70% shows steady shot-stopping at a high level.

What makes Okoye special for Alonso is his calm passing style. He has completed over 500 passes this season and often starts quick counter-attacks with long, accurate balls, perfect for Alonso’s possession-based system.

He also showed strong mental strength. After missing the start of the season due to a legal investigation that was later cleared in May 2026, he returned and played so well that he was named Udinese Player of the Season.

At 1.98m, his height gives Chelsea something they currently lack and that is, true dominance in the air. Chelsea will not need to break the bank to sign the Nigeria international valued at only ten million euros.

Calvin Bassey

With Chelsea’s defence lacking leadership and suffering from constant rotations (due to the injuries of Wesley Fofana and inconsistencies of Tosin Adarabioyo), Alonso requires a commanding presence to build a high line.

That makes Nigeria's Calvin Bassey a serious option for Chelsea’s rebuild.

The 26-year-old Fulham defender reached his 100th appearance milestone at the weekend during a 1-1 draw against Wolves. His consistency and fitness have been key features this season, with over 2,300 minutes played.

Bassey’s biggest strength is his physical power combined with speed. Fulham's Player of the Season last year, he wins duels aggressively and can recover quickly when Chelsea play a high defensive line.

He also fits Alonso’s system because of his passing. With 88% pass accuracy and over 140 long passes completed this season, he can help switch play quickly from defence to attack.

Importantly, he is flexible; able to play as a left-back, left centre-back, or part of a back three. That gives Alonso tactical freedom during matches.

Victor Osimhen

Victor Osimhen remains the most important target of all.

Chelsea lack the guaranteed 25-goal-a-season physical presence that Erling Haaland gives City or the fluid, lethal structural interchange that Arsenal possess. João Pedro and Liam Delap have shown promise, but a true title charge requires an uncompromising, world-class goalscorer. That is exactly what Osimhen offers.

Now at Galatasaray, the Super Eagles striker has scored 22 goals and provided 8 assists in 29 starts during the 2025-26 season. His scoring rate of 0.79 goals per game shows why top clubs across Europe are still watching him closely.

Chelsea have chased him before, but Alonso’s arrival could restart serious negotiations.

Osimhen is the exact template of what Chelsea have been missing, a striker who finishes chances consistently. He also presses aggressively, runs behind defences, and creates space for players like Cole Palmer.

His experience is another key factor. He has already won league titles in Italy and Turkey, proving he can deliver under pressure. At 27, he is in his prime and ready for a Premier League challenge.

With Arsenal and Manchester City already setting a high standard at the top of the Premier League, Alonso’s success may depend on how quickly Chelsea turn these targets into reality.
