Frank Onyeka ended his two-year goal drought in Coventry City's thrilling 3-2 Championship win over Derby County, Soccernet.ng reports.
The Nigerian midfielder's long wait for a goal finally came to an end on a lively afternoon at the Coventry Building Society Arena, and it was worth every second.
Onyeka produced a moment of real quality to help Coventry City on their promotion push, underlining just how important he has become since arriving at the club.
The former Augsburg ace scored his first goal for Coventry City in their Championship clash with Derby County, and it was a strike to remember.

A stunning long-range strike, the effort flew into the net in the 12th minute to give the home side an early lead.
It was Onyeka’s first at club level in almost two years, with his last coming for Brentford back in April 2024.
However, Coventry were stunned just before halftime as Chilean star Brereton Díaz struck to cancel out Onyeka's opener.

Englishman Jack Rudoni put Coventry back in front just past the hour-mark but the home side were pegged back again by another Diaz equaliser, this time from the penalty spot.
However, with ten minutes left on the clock, Rudoni completed his brace to secure all three points for Frank Lampard's men.

A key figure in Coventry’s promotion charge
Onyeka joined Coventry City on loan from Brentford in February 2026, a move designed to give him more regular playing time. The agreement includes a mandatory permanent transfer if Coventry secure promotion to the Premier League, and based on current form, that is looking increasingly likely.

Since stepping into the side under Frank Lampard, Onyeka has made an immediate impact. He quickly established himself as a regular starter in midfield and even picked up a Man of the Match award in just his second appearance, during a 2-0 win over West Bromwich Albion.
Lampard has already praised the midfielder’s influence, describing his debut performance against Middlesbrough as ‘outstanding.' That early impression has been backed up by consistent displays, with Onyeka bringing balance, energy, and composure to the team.

His arrival has also coincided with Coventry’s strong run of form. As of early April, they sit at the top of the Championship table, firmly in control of the title race and in a strong position to secure promotion to the Premier League.
Onyeka’s role in that rise cannot be overstated. He has helped stabilise the midfield, break up opposition attacks, and now, with this goal, shown he can also deliver decisive moments going forward.
If Coventry do go on to win promotion, Onyeka’s move will automatically become permanent, a reward for both player and club. On current evidence, he looks ready not just to help them get there, but to thrive at the next level as well.
