FIFA has imposed disciplinary fines on the Nigeria Football Federation and the DR Congo Football Association following incidents between the Super Eagles and the DR Congo, Soccernet.ng reports.

The sanctions relate to the tense November encounter that ultimately ended Nigeria’s hopes of progressing in the qualification race for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, a match that has remained controversial amid Nigeria’s ongoing eligibility protest against several Congolese players.

FIFA sanctions NFF and DR Congo FA after playoff incidents

According to FIFA’s latest disciplinary overview covering World Cup qualifying fixtures, both football federations were found guilty of separate breaches of the governing body’s disciplinary code during the match played on November 16, 2025.

The Nigerian federation was sanctioned after spectators were reported to have thrown objects during the game — an incident that falls under Articles 17 and 17.2.b of the FIFA Disciplinary Code.

As a result, FIFA fined the NFF 1,000 Swiss francs for failing to maintain proper order and security during the match.

The Congolese federation received a significantly heavier penalty after their supporters were found to have used laser pointers or similar electronic devices during the encounter.

The act violates Article 17.2.d of the FIFA Disciplinary Code, leading FIFA to impose a 5,000 Swiss francs fine on the DR Congo Football Association.

The world football governing body noted that disciplinary sanctions are determined based on the circumstances of each case and that the decisions may still be subject to appeal.

Super Eagles still awaiting FIFA verdict on eligibility protest

The disciplinary measures come as Nigeria continues to await a separate ruling from FIFA regarding the NFF’s protest over the alleged use of ineligible players by DR Congo.

Nigeria’s qualification hopes were dashed after the Leopards defeated the Super Eagles 4–3 on penalties in the African playoff final played in Morocco.

However, shortly after the defeat, the NFF submitted a formal petition questioning the eligibility of several players who represented DR Congo during the match.

The Nigerian federation argued that the Congolese FA may have misled FIFA while securing nationality clearance for a number of overseas-born players.

Players listed in Nigeria’s complaint reportedly included Lionel Mpasi, Aaron Wan-Bissaka, Axel Tuanzebe, Arthur Masuaku, Samuel Moutoussamy, Cédric Bakambu, Noah Sadiki, and Nathanaël Mbuku, along with several substitutes who were also part of the matchday squad.

Nigeria’s petition reportedly questioned how some of the players received clearance to represent DR Congo shortly before the decisive playoff despite having been called up earlier.

NSC boss insists FIFA verdict still pending

Despite recent developments, Chairman of the National Sports Commission of Nigeria, Shehu Dikko, has urged Nigerians not to interpret DR Congo’s presence in the upcoming playoff fixtures as a final decision.

“As far as we know, FIFA is yet to give its verdict,” Dikko said.

“The fact that DR Congo appears among the six nations to compete for the final two spots in the playoff is not enough to jump to the conclusion that FIFA has thrown out Nigeria’s petition.”

DR Congo are currently listed among the teams preparing for the intercontinental playoff tournament, where they are scheduled to face the winner of the semifinal between the Jamaica national football team and the New Caledonia national football team for a place at the 2026 World Cup.

Meanwhile, Nigeria continues to await FIFA’s final ruling on the eligibility dispute, which could determine whether the Super Eagles still have any chance of returning to the qualification race.
