Super Eagles striker Victor Osimhen has affirmed confidence in his ability, as he sees himself as one of the best strikers in the world, Soccernet.ng reports.
The 27-year-old forward has been in inspiring form since joining Turkish giants Galatasaray two years ago, and he has proven to be the deserving focal point of the Cimbom attack. Despite just being in his second year at Rams Park, Osimhen has contributed well over 50 goals.
Next up, Galatasaray lock horns with Italian giants Juventus in a crucial UEFA Champions League fixture, and all eyes will be on the Nigerian marksman to see if he can can deliver the goals against a side managed by old boss, Luciano Spalletti.
His Galatasaray side are battling for a spot in the round of 16, and a victory against the Old Lady in the first leg would put them in a commanding position ahead of the second leg in Turin next week.
For Osimhen, the game carries extra weight as he reunites with Spalletti. Recall that the duo led Napoli to their first Scudetto in over three decades, with Osimhen finishing as the league's top scorer.
In a recent interview, the 27-year-old striker even credited Spalletti for moulding him as a man and as a player.
“People said we (me and Spalletti) were arguing, but it wasn't true: I respect him so much,” Osimhen told CDS.
“He slept for months in Napoli's training center, working day and night to convince us we could win the Scudetto.
“He brought Kim, Anguissa, Kvaratskhelia, and even me to peak condition, triumphing with a club that hadn't achieved that in decades. He expected a lot, but he gave you so much. Certain coaches help you grow first as a man and then as a footballer.”
Osimhen Rates Himself Among the World's Best
Now, Osimhen is set to meet his former coach, but this time, as a foe.
Speaking ahead of the encounter, the Super Eagles star was unapologetic about his status among the global elite.
The former African Footballer of the Year made it clear that while he respects other footballers he is fully aware of his uniqueness, stating that he sees himself among the elite in world football.
”I don't like making comparisons, but I know I'm among the best center-forwards around,” Osimhen stated.
“If I'm not number one, I'm number two. Or, at worst, number three. I know what I bring to the table and the quality I possess to help my team win games.”
Juventus boast a decent defensive setup, but stopping a confident Osimhen is a tough task for any defender.
His ability to run into channels, his aerial prowess, and his finishing makes him a danger. He will be looking to prove his class and spur his team to success on Tuesday evening.
