The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has opened a disciplinary review into the conduct of Nigeria goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali, Soccernet.ng reports.
This follows the Super Eagles’ dramatic semi-final exit to hosts Morocco at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations.
Nigeria were eliminated 4-2 on penalties after a goalless draw in Rabat, but events after the final whistle have continued to dominate discussions around the match.
According to several reliable sources, including insider Micky Jnr, CAF’s disciplinary officials are examining video footage that appears to show the Super Eagles goalkeeper making controversial gestures towards sections of the home crowd.

The images, which have circulated widely on social media since Wednesday night, reportedly include a moment in which Nwabali is alleged to have directed a middle finger towards Moroccan supporters in the stands. If confirmed, the incident could be deemed a breach of CAF’s disciplinary regulations, particularly those covering conduct towards spectators.
The semi-final itself was played in an intense and emotionally charged atmosphere, with the stadium overwhelmingly backing the host nation.
Nwabali, who had been a key figure in Nigeria’s journey to the last four, was under constant pressure throughout the match and the subsequent penalty shoot-out.
Some Nigerian observers have argued that the goalkeeper’s actions, if they occurred as alleged, should be viewed in the context of provocation from the stands. However, CAF has historically taken a strict stance on behaviour considered offensive or inappropriate, regardless of the circumstances surrounding it.

Stanley Nwabali for now remains eligible to feature for Nigeria in Saturday’s third-place playoff against Egypt in Casablanca, as no provisional suspension has been announced.
The Super Eagles are aiming to secure a record-extending ninth bronze medal at the Africa Cup of Nations, while Egypt, seven-time champions of the tournament, have claimed third place on three previous occasions.
The winner of the playoff will not receive their bronze medals immediately after the match. Instead, the team will travel to Rabat to attend the final between Senegal and Morocco, where the third-place prize will be formally presented after the tournament’s showpiece event.
