Nigeria Super Falcons forward Esther Okoronkwo has been tipped to excel as the World Sevens Football tournament stages its first-ever North American edition this weekend in Florida, Soccernet.ng reports.

Toronto coach Marko Milanovic believes the unique seven-a-side format is purpose-built for the Nigerian striker, whose game thrives on pace, sharp movement and playing off the shoulder of the last defender.

One key element of the tournament is its no-offside rule and Milanovic is confident Okoronkwo will thrive in such conditions.

“Esther will love it, I’m sure,” Milanovic said, as per Battlefordsnow.

The Serbian coach, recently named NSL Coach of the Year, described the competition as “basically an indoor soccer game, played outside,” with unlimited rolling substitutions and a pitch half the size of a traditional field.

For Esther Okoronkwo, the event represents both an opportunity and an escape. She has spent the past two weeks recovering emotionally from Toronto’s painful 2–1 defeat to Vancouver Rise in the Northern Super League final on 15 November, an upset that came despite Toronto dominating possession, shots and territory.

The Nigerian forward, who lifted the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco earlier this year, was aiming to claim her third trophy of the year.

Toronto entered the final as regular-season champions and had overpowered Montreal Roses 6–1 on aggregate to reach the showpiece, but two second-half goals undone their campaign.

Okoronkwo joins AFC Toronto’s 16-player travelling group departing Wednesday for Florida, where US$5 million in prize money awaits eight elite clubs from across the Americas. The lineup includes Mexico’s Club América and Tigres Femenil, Brazil’s Flamengo, Colombia’s Deportivo Cali, Uruguay’s Nacional, and NWSL sides Kansas City Current and San Diego Wave.

Tournament format offers fresh tactical landscape for Nigeria’s Okoronkwo, AFC Toronto

The World Sevens Football competition features 30-minute matches, unlimited substitutions and no offsides; conditions defenders traditionally dislike but forwards relish. Milanovic warned that the tactical shift will require rapid adaptation.

“The biggest adjustment is no offsides, because our backline is used to having offsides,” he explained. “You’ve trained your whole life to hold the line… but now you have to track players that are clearly offside.”

For attackers such as Okoronkwo and teammate Kaylee Hunter, the freedom to stretch defences without penalty may prove decisive. Toronto begins Group 1 action on Friday against Tigres before facing Flamengo and Kansas City on Saturday. The top two teams will progress to Sunday’s semifinals at Beyond Bancard Field in Davie, Florida.

The 7,000-capacity venue is home to Fort Lauderdale United FC and sits just a short drive from Chase Stadium, where Inter Miami and Vancouver Whitecaps meet in Saturday’s MLS Cup final.

The women’s game has high standards to match. Bayern Munich were crowned champions of the inaugural World Sevens Football in May, defeating Manchester United 2–1 in Estoril after crushing PSG 5–0 in the semifinals. Rising Canadian star Simi Awujo earned Breakout Player honours at that tournament.

The competition, co-founded by U.S. philanthropist Jennifer Mackesy, who is also a co-owner of NWSL champions Gotham FC, requires participating clubs to share portions of prize earnings with players and staff.

With Okoronkwo eager for redemption, her performances will be crucial as Toronto aims to rebound from their NSL heartbreak.
