Nigeria vs Uganda: Three Cranes stars the Super Eagles must stop to avoid a shock

Nigeria face Uganda on Tuesday with very different pressures weighing on each side as the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations enter its first decisive stage, Soccernet.ng reports.

The Super Eagles are already through as group leaders after back-to-back wins, a position that could tempt the coaching staff to rotate and hand minutes to fringe players.

Uganda, by contrast, arrive desperate. The Cranes need a result to keep their qualifying hopes alive, and they will unleash their biggest weapons with urgency and belief.

That imbalance in motivation can be dangerous. Uganda may be lower-ranked, but they are organised, hungry and built around a small core of players capable of hurting any opponent on their day. If Nigeria are loose, experimental or complacent, these three men are the ones most likely to punish them.

Uganda: Allan Okello

Allan Okello remains the creative heartbeat of this Ugandan side. The Vipers SC midfielder, who also tasted football in Algeria’s top flight, is not just a domestic star; he is the Cranes’ most productive attacker in this squad.

A former youth international, Okello has scored six goals in 32 senior appearances for Uganda, more than any other player currently available. Last season, he finished as the Uganda Premier League’s Golden Boot winner.

His intelligence between the lines is his biggest strength. Okello drifts cleverly into pockets of space, links play at speed and strikes cleanly from distance. Nigeria must be especially alert to his late runs around the edge of the box, where he does his best work.

There is also a psychological edge. At the weekend, Okello missed a decisive penalty in the 1-1 draw with Tanzania, a moment that denied Uganda a vital win. Had that kick gone in, the Cranes would now need only a draw against Nigeria.

Expect a player with something to prove, eager to redeem himself. If Nigeria allow him time to think, he will dictate rhythm and direction.

Uche Ikpeazu

Few subplots will matter more emotionally than Uche Ikpeazu’s. Born in England to a Nigerian father and a Ugandan mother, he could easily have been lining up in green and white. Instead, he chose Uganda and arrives with something to prove.

Ikpeazu opened his Uganda scoring account against Tanzania, rising to convert Denis Omedi’s delivery with authority. That equaliser kept the Cranes alive. Big, strong and relentless, Ikpeazu thrives on physical duels and aerial battles.

This is where Nigeria must be careful. With possible rotation at centre-back, Ikpeazu will test concentration, timing and strength. Calvin Bassey, if deployed centrally, could be key; not just in winning duels, but in preventing Ikpeazu from pinning defenders and bringing others into play.

Motivation will not be lacking. Scoring against Nigeria would be personal, symbolic and potentially career-defining.

Denis Omedi

Denis Omedi’s story is already part of AFCON folklore. At 31, the former nurse and prison warder is living a footballing dream that once seemed impossible. But sentiment alone does not explain his threat.

Omedi has momentum and belief. His late strike against Tunisia in Uganda’s opening group match may have come in defeat, but it announced him on the continental stage.

Since breaking into top-flight football in 2023, he has scored freely, finishing with 15 league goals for Kitara FC and earning a move to APR FC, where he helped win the Rwandan league title.

Technically, Omedi is sharp rather than flashy. He attacks space intelligently, finishes quickly and presses defenders with purpose. His assist for Ikpeazu against Tanzania showed his vision as well as his work rate.

Nigeria must track his movement carefully, especially if the midfield shape changes. Omedi thrives on second balls and broken play, exactly the moments that occur when teams experiment.
