Southampton coach Tonda Eckert has given a glowing recommendation of Super Eagles midfielder Joe Aribo, just four weeks into his stay at the club, Soccernet.ng reports.
Aribo had a difficult start to the season at Southampton under former coach Will Still. The Super Eagles star had to wait until the start of this month before making his first appearance for the club.
It was a five-minute cameo for The Saints in a Championship game against Preston North End.
However, Still was sacked at the start of November, and Eckert was employed as the interim manager.
The 32-year-old tactician has enjoyed a decent start to life so far, picking up four wins from his first five games.
Aribo has also gotten more minutes, playing an average of 26 minutes in Southampton's last three games.
The Saints lost their last game against Millwall on Saturday, and Aribo played 29 minutes in that fixture. After the game, Eckert had only praise for the Super Eagles midfielder.
“I am very happy with Joe. He has been excellent every time he has come on, and he is in very good shape,” Eckert said, per Saints Extra.
Is It Time For Eric Chelle To Consider Joe Aribo?
Joe Aribo has been out of the Super Eagles fold for several months, primarily due to his lack of game time at club level.
However, Tonda Eckert's words suggest that the 29-year-old midfielder is close to returning to his best. As such, he is definitely one to watch.
Since Eric Chelle took over as coach of the Super Eagles, he has developed a reputation for inviting only a few midfielders to camp, a strategy that has often been counter-productive.
While his decision can be questioned, there are only a handful of Nigerian midfielders playing at a top level. Furthermore, the home-based players have not been convincing enough in recent years, leading to a lack of trust.
Aribo is one of the more experienced Nigerian midfielders, with 34 caps to his name. He has also played at the Africa Cup of Nations.
With the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations fast approaching, coach Chelle will need the best and most experienced Nigerian players. Aribo could be that man for the Super Eagles.
If Aribo wasn't being seriously considered previously, perhaps Eckert's recent comments will grab Chelle's attention.
