Super Eagles goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali has issued a heartfelt apology to Nigerians after the team failed to qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, Soccernet.ng reports.

Nigeria's dream of reaching the tournament, scheduled to be hosted in North America, evaporated on Sunday night in Rabat following a dramatic penalty shootout defeat to DR Congo in the CAF playoffs final.

Stanley Nwabali, who had been one of Nigeria’s standout performers throughout the qualifying series, produced another commanding display on the night.

He denied a bullet header deep into added time of extra time and saved two spot-kicks during the shootout.

Yet his efforts were not enough as the Leopards edged Nigeria 4–3 on penalties, ending the country’s hopes of returning to the World Cup for the first time since 2018.

Moments after the match, the Chippa United goalkeeper took to Instagram to share his emotions and accept responsibility on behalf of the squad.

“Painful! We all did our best for the badge though our best wasn’t enough. I was once a fan and understand how it feels giving you a disappointing night, we take full responsibility,” he wrote.

2026 World Cup: Stanley Nwabali and Nigeria’s missed chance

The match had begun brightly for Nigeria, with Frank Onyeka firing the Super Eagles ahead inside three minutes. The early goal briefly suggested a comfortable evening for Eric Chelle’s side, but Congo DR responded strongly. Meshack Elia’s equaliser in the 32nd minute restored balance and set the tone for a bruising contest.

Nigeria’s momentum was further disrupted when Victor Osimhen, the team’s talisman and leading striker, failed to return for the second half due to injury. From that moment, Congo DR seized control. The Leopards dictated possession, pressed aggressively, and forced Nigeria into long defensive spells before ultimately dragging the tie into penalties.

The defeat is a heavy blow for a nation that had entered the final playoff with renewed optimism. Nigeria had finished second in their qualifying group with 17 points and arrived in Rabat buoyed by a commanding 4–1 win over Gabon in the semifinals.

Instead, the Super Eagles have now missed consecutive World Cup tournaments for the first time in their history, having also failed to reach Qatar 2022. Since making their debut at USA 1994, Nigeria had never suffered back-to-back absences until now.

The victory, however, represents a landmark moment for DR Congo.

The Leopards advance to the FIFA six-team intercontinental playoffs scheduled for March in Mexico, where they will compete for one of the final two tickets to the World Cup. Their last and only appearance at the tournament came in 1974, and they now stand within touching distance of a long-awaited return.
