Flying Eagles head coach, Aliyu Zubair, joins seven Nigerians who have coached abroad after securing an appointment with Egyptian second-division side Telecom Egypt SC, Soccernet.ng reports.
This is a new chapter for Zubairu, who impressed during his time with Nigeria’s U20 setup and now joins the growing list of Nigerian managers who have coached a team beyond Nigerian soil.
For years, Nigerian talent has flourished on the pitch across Europe, Asia and Africa. Now, Nigerian managers are earning opportunities to showcase their tactical qualities away from home.
Seven Nigerians who have coached abroad
Ndubuisi Egbo
Ndubuisi Egbo made headlines in 2020 after guiding KF Tirana to the Albanian league title to become the first African coach to win a European top-flight crown and also to qualify a team for the UEFA Champions League.
Sunday Oliseh
Former Super Eagles captain Sunday Oliseh has coached outside Nigeria, including a spell at Belgian sides Eupen and RCS Verviétois. He also had a notable stint with Fortuna Sittard in the Netherlands.
Emmanuel Amuneke
AFCON 1994 winner Emmanuel Amuneke has managed across borders, most notably in Sudan with Al Khartoum Watani. He has also worked in Saudi Arabia and guided Tanzania to AFCON qualification while serving as their national team coach.
Harrison Okagbue
Harrison Okagbue previously handled the Uganda national team between 1999 and 2001, where he earned respect in East Africa.
Christian Chukwu
Former Super Eagles boss Christian Chukwu also spent time coaching outside Nigeria, managing the Kenya national team in the late 1990s.
Samson Siasia
Samson Siasia was signed as head coach for Durgapur Vox Champions in India’s short-lived Bengal Premier League Soccer project in 2012. However, the league collapsed before commencement.
Steven Keshi
Late Keshi handled the Togolese national team and famously guided them to qualify for the 2006 FIFA World Cup. Aside from that, the former Super Eagles defender also coached the Mali national team out of Nigeria.
