Nigeria to join China, Chile in Russia’s proposed ‘World Cup for the non-qualified’ tournament – report

Nigeria’s Super Eagles may yet find themselves back on the global football map after reports emerged that Russia is pushing forward with plans for a parallel tournament during the 2026 FIFA World Cup, Soccernet.ng reports.

According to WorldSoccerTalk, the tournament is designed exclusively for nations that failed to qualify for the World Cup to be co-hosted by the United States, Canada and Mexico.

The idea forms part of the Russian Football Union’s attempt to regain visibility following its exclusion from FIFA and UEFA competitions since 2022. And significantly for Nigeria, the Super Eagles are named among the nations being considered.

Nigeria’s own absence from the expanded 48-team World Cup remains a sore point. The three-time African champions fell agonisingly short after finishing second behind South Africa in the qualifiers and later losing 4–3 on penalties to DR Congo in the African playoff final in Morocco.

The Super Eagles had beaten Gabon 4-1 after extra time in the semi-final but were undone in the decisive match after both sides played out a tense 1-1 draw across 120 minutes. DR Congo now move on to the intercontinental playoff in Mexico, leaving Nigeria’s World Cup hopes in flames.

Yet Russia’s proposal, still unofficial but gathering momentum, may provide the Nigerians with a rare platform to regroup, test emerging talent, and maintain high-level competition in a year when they were expected to feature at the world’s biggest football tournament.

Russia’s strategic proposal: Nigeria and the teams in the frame

Russia’s reported plan centres on assembling eight to twelve teams who will not appear at the 2026 World Cup.

Names floated include Russia, Serbia, Greece, Chile, Peru, Venezuela, Nigeria, Cameroon, China and, in some reports, Armenia.

The format would mirror a compressed international championship, using four stadiums from the 2018 World Cup. For Russia, the motivations are clear: reclaim visibility, challenge their footballing isolation, and signal that the country retains the infrastructure and capability to host major events.

Whether nations, especially African federations, will agree to participate remains uncertain. FIFA legitimacy issues, scheduling clashes with the World Cup, and diplomatic considerations may complicate matters.

For Nigeria, whose fans continue to reflect on the painful near-miss in qualifying, the tournament could serve as an unexpected but valuable opportunity. It would offer competitive minutes for a squad in transition and allow the Super Eagles to measure themselves against reputable opposition outside the FIFA framework.

Nigeria’s immediate target is the 2025 CAF Africa Cup of Nations in December where the Super Eagles will look to better their second-place finish at the last edition.

Still, as the football world builds toward 2026, Russia’s alternative tournament may become one of the most closely watched off-field stories.
