Nigeria’s slim World Cup dream receives boost as Rwanda fire warning to South Africa

Rwanda head coach Adel Amrouche has issued a spirited warning to South Africa ahead of their decisive 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifier on Tuesday and his defiant words are music to Nigerian ears, Soccernet.ng reports.

South Africa, who sit second in Group C with 15 points, face a tricky final test against Rwanda, already eliminated from the race.

But despite having nothing tangible to play for, the Amavubi have vowed to fight for pride, honour, and national identity — and in doing so, could shape the fate of two footballing heavyweights.

Group leaders Benin Republic currently top the group with 17 points and need only a draw in Uyo against Nigeria to reach their first-ever World Cup. Nigeria, third with 14 points, must win and hope South Africa fail to beat Rwanda if they are to make the Mundial.

Amrouche’s pledge, therefore, has sent ripples across the group, especially in Nigeria, where fans will be counting on the Rwandans to hold firm in South Africa.

“We are disappointed, yes, because we wanted to win that match,” Amrouche said, reflecting on last Friday’s 1-0 home defeat to Benin.

“But this is football. What matters now is our reaction and I can assure you, we will not go down easily against South Africa. We will fight for every ball.”

Rwandan dignity at stake, says Amrouche

While Amrouche admitted the defeat to Benin ended Rwanda’s qualification hopes, he maintained belief in his players’ resilience and character.

“We are building something solid,” he continued. “Our players have shown heart, hunger, and belief. Even if the results have not gone our way, our performances show that we belong at this level.”

He urged his team to finish their campaign with passion and pride, describing the South Africa clash as a matter of national character rather than mathematics.

“It’s not over until the final whistle,” he added. “This is about dignity, identity, and the Rwandan spirit. South Africa will meet a team that refuses to give up.”

For Nigeria, the Amavubi’s fighting talk offers a glimmer of hope.

The Super Eagles, who missed out on Qatar 2022, are desperate to return to the World Cup stage after a turbulent qualifying journey. Their fate now hinges not only on their own result against Benin in Uyo but also on Rwanda’s ability to frustrate South Africa.

The Super Eagles have a perfect winning record against Benin Republic's Cheetahs on Nigerian soil and Eric Chelle’s men will aim to continue that streak in Uyo on Tuesday.
