Flying Eagles of Nigeria are set for another showdown against Argentina in the Round of 16 at the ongoing 24th FIFA U20 World Cup in Chile, Soccernet.ng reports.

Two years ago, the same fixture produced one of Nigeria’s most memorable youth football victories with a 2-0 triumph over the hosts in San Juan, courtesy of goals from Ibrahim Muhammad and Haliru Sarki.

This time, coach Aliyu Zubairu and his players will look to reproduce that magic in Santiago, relying on tactics and self-belief that have defined their campaign so far.

While Argentina breezed through their group with nine points, Nigeria’s resilience in a tougher group has proven their mental strength.

Five Flying Eagles players who could punish Argentina

1. Daniel Bameyi

The Flying Eagles captain has been the heartbeat of the team. Bameyi has scored in consecutive matches—converting penalties against Saudi Arabia and Colombia, with his late equaliser in the latter securing Nigeria’s passage to the Round of 16.

His leadership from the back could once again prove decisive against Argentina’s sharp attack.

2. Amos Ochoche

The energetic right-back, just 19 years old, has been one of Nigeria’s most consistent performers in Chile. Ochoche was on the scoresheet against Saudi Arabia and followed it up with a brilliant all-round display versus Colombia, where he recorded 64 touches, created a big chance, won 10 duels, made 3 interceptions, and completed 4 clearances.

His ability to contribute both defensively and offensively could be vital in containing Argentina’s wide threats while providing width in attack.

3. Tahir Maigana

While Maigana has yet to find the net, his attacking movement and physical presence have caused constant problems for defenders.

Against Colombia, the forward registered four shots—the highest in the game—with an xG of 0.22 and xGOT of 0.51.

His 78% passing accuracy and 73% accuracy in the final third depict his intelligence in tight spaces. If he can stay clinical, Maigana could be the difference-maker Nigeria need in front of goal.

4. Isreal Ayuma

Controlling the tempo from midfield, Ayuma’s influence has grown with every match. Against Colombia, he completed 23 of 31 passes (74%), including 8 of 11 in the final third (73%), and delivered 4 long passes with one accurate cross.

His ability to link play, and carry the ball under pressure makes him a key figure in Nigeria’s bid to dominate possession and neutralise Argentina’s transitions.

5. Kparobo Arierhi

Dubbed “the next Victor Osimhen” by Alex Iwobi, the Flying Eagles’ number nine has yet to hit the back of the net in Chile—but his work rate and movement have kept defenders on edge.

Arierhi has attempted 11 shots in the group stage, showing his intent, though luck hasn’t been on his side. The Round of 16 against Argentina could be the perfect stage for his breakout moment, and a goal here would boost his confidence and potentially send Nigeria into the quarter-finals.

Nigeria vs Argentina: Date, Time & Venue

The Round of 16 clash between Nigeria and Argentina will take place on Wednesday, October 8, 2025, at the Estadio Nacional Julio Martínez Prádanos in Santiago, Chile.

Kick-off is scheduled for 8:30 p.m. Nigerian time as the Flying Eagles aim to light up Santiago just as they did in San Juan two years ago.
