Benin Republic head coach Abdoulaye Ouzerou insists his side will not be intimidated by Nigeria’s Super Falcons as both nations prepare to battle for a place at the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON), Soccernet.ng reports.

Benin face the ten-time African champions in the final qualifying round, with the first leg set to be played later this week in Lomé, Togo.

Despite acknowledging Nigeria’s technical superiority, Ouzerou believes his players possess the mental strength to challenge their more illustrious opponents.

“We’re going to count on their heart, because if you’re physically and technically inferior, you have to compensate mentally,” the coach said confidently as per Daily Post.

“And for me, mentally, they’re ready. We’re going to rely heavily on that mentality.”

Nigeria, the most successful nation in the history of the WAFCON, have never failed to qualify for the tournament.

Ouzerou is aware of the massive effort it would take to stop the Super Falcons from reaching Morocco next year but the tactician is convinced that, in football, nothing is impossible.

“There’s no comparison possible physically and technically,” Ouzerou admitted. “We know that, we’re not crazy. But mentally, I believe we can make up for those differences.”

The match will take place at Stade Kégué in Lomé, as Benin do not currently have a CAF-approved stadium.

The return leg is scheduled for the MKO Abiola Sports Complex in Abeokuta, Nigeria, on Tuesday, October 28, 2025.

Benin to face a star-studded Falcons team

Nigeria coach Justine Madugu has named a powerful 21-player squad featuring team captain Rasheedat Ajibade and Barcelona forward Asisat Oshoala for the crucial two-legged tie.

The list also includes some of Africa’s brightest talents: goalkeeper Chiamaka Nnadozie, the continent’s Goalkeeper of the Year for two consecutive seasons; defenders Michelle Alozie and Ashleigh Plumptre; and midfielders Jennifer Echegini and Deborah Abiodun. Forward Chinwendu Ihezuo and exciting youngster Folashade Ijamilusi also make the squad.

In total, Madugu has called up three goalkeepers, seven defenders, five midfielders, and six forwards, a mix of experience and youthful energy designed to seal Nigeria’s qualification for Morocco 2026.

The upcoming WAFCON will not only crown the next continental champions but also serve as Africa’s qualifying tournament for the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup in Brazil.

With their rich history and formidable depth, the Super Falcons are overwhelming favourites.

However, Benin’s spirited coach Ouzerou has made it clear that his side will not roll over easily. His team may lack Nigeria’s star power, but they arrive with belief, unity, and something to prove.
