Former Super Eagles striker Yakubu Aiyegbeni has backed Ademola Lookman to put his transfer saga behind him and rediscover his best form at Atalanta Soccernet.ng reports.
The Nigerian attacker was on the verge of leaving Atalanta during the 2025 summer transfer window, but his move to Inter Milan did not go through.
What has Yakubu Aiyegbeni said about Lookman's transfer
Speaking to Footy-Africa, Aiyegbeni admitted that missing out on a big move can weigh heavily on any player but praised Lookman for his professionalism in returning to action with Atalanta after a turbulent summer.
“I know situations like this can be very difficult for a player,” Aiyegbeni said. “When a move you were expecting doesn’t happen, it affects your state of mind. But I must commend Lookman for staying patient and Atalanta for welcoming him back in. For me, the most important thing is that he is back on the pitch, because that is where he can do what he does best, scoring goals and making an impact for his team.”
Aside from Inter Milan, Bayern Munich, and Tottenham Hotspur were all linked with the Nigerian forward. However, Atalanta stood firm, rejecting multiple bids and moving to open talks on a new contract extension for the 27-year-old.
Aiyegbeni advises Lookman
Aiyegbeni, who starred in the Premier League with Everton and Middlesbrough, believes the resolution of the saga is a positive outcome for both parties.
“Atalanta need him, and he also needs Atalanta to keep pushing his career forward,” the former Super Eagles striker added. “It’s good to see they have found common ground, and I hope from here he can enjoy his football again, stay focused, and deliver the performances we all know he is capable of.”
