Why I joined Werder Bremen from Leverkusen – Victor Boniface

Super Eagles striker Victor Boniface has shared his first words as a Werder Bremen player after joining Die Grün-Weißen on a season-long loan from Bayer 04 Leverkusen, Soccernet.ng reports.

The 24-year-old has endured a torrid summer. He's seen his place at Leverkusen displaced, while failing a medical that saw a potential move to AC Milan fall through.

In a quick turn of events, Boniface sealed a loan move to the Weserstadion yesterday, and is excited to get his spell with the four-time German Champions started.

Why Boniface joined Werder Bremen

The versatile attacker revealed the transfer process sped up very quickly, and thanked his former Union-Saint Gilloise teammate [who's currently at Werder], Senne Lynen for making his onboarding process seamless.

“Everything just happened so quickly which I was pleased about. I had some great conversations with the people at Werder which gave me a good feeling about the move. I’m so happy to be here,” the Nigerian forward said in quotes revealed by the club's official website.

“The last few weeks haven’t been easy for me. The people here at Werder told me their exact plans and it didn’t take them long to convince me. I was on board immediately and I am very pleased that it has come to be.

“Senne texted me four days ago just asking if I was alright and if there was a possibility of this move happening. I texted him back and said it would be difficult.

“I texted him again two days ago to tell him that things had changed slightly. He’s a good friend of mine and I had a great time with him in Saint-Gilloise.

“We’ve spoken a lot about how much he enjoys both the city and the club, which I found very helpful.”

Quizzed about what he aims to achieve personally with his move to Werder Bremen, Boniface put personal glory aside, and mentioned he wants to do whatever it takes to help his team.

“I never set myself any personal goals ahead of the season, such as scoring a certain amount of goals and so on.

“I want to be successful with the team and I want to win games. I’d love to do that with Werder this season.

“I remember it being loud when I scored against them last season. The atmosphere was actually really good, but I hope that my next goal will be in a Werder kit and that I can celebrate it alongside all of the fans.

“I’m delighted with the support I’m getting from the fans and the whole club, as well as the excitement that the news of my transfer brought about.

“That’s the biggest thing for a footballer. I want to use this excitement to give them something back on the pitch,” the former Bodo/Glimt man concluded.

Boniface will be able to settle into life with his new teammates during the International break as he wasn't included in Eric Chelle's squad to take on Rwanda and South Africa this month.
