Official: Nigerian forward Uchendu leaves Nantes for Australian champions Melbourne City

Melbourne City FC mew signing Uchendu

Super Falcons striker Chinaza Uchendu has signed for Melbourne City FC, sealing a move that adds serious firepower to the Australian champions ahead of the new A-League Women’s season, Soccernet.ng reports.

The 27-year-old joins from French side FC Nantes Féminine, continuing a career that has already taken her across five countries.

The Nigeria international previously turned out for Rivers Angels in Nigeria, SC Braga in Portugal, Linköping in Sweden, Gyeongju KHNP in South Korea and Turkish giants Galatasaray, where she won a league title.

Once a regular face in Nigeria’s Super Falcons set-up, Uchendu has 10 caps and was part of the squad that lifted the 2018 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations. She also featured at the 2019 FIFA Women’s World Cup, helping Nigeria reach the round of 16.

City’s Director of Football, Michael Petrillo, said the Nigerian’s versatility will be key.

“We’re thrilled to welcome Chinaza to Melbourne City,” Petrillo said.

“She has a great attacking skill set, which aligns perfectly with our tactical philosophy. She also has a great deal of experience across multiple environments – including her international pedigree – which will be a big boost to our squad.

“Her ability to impact matches in various roles up front will add to the flexibility and options in our front third, which is crucial playing in two competitions again this season.”

For Uchendu, the move represents both a fresh challenge and the chance to add silverware to an already decorated CV.

“It’s an honour to join a Club with such a strong reputation and commitment to excellence,” Uchendu said.

“I’m excited to embrace this new challenge and help bring more silverware to Melbourne City.

“I’ve heard wonderful things about the Club’s culture and professionalism, and everyone has been incredibly welcoming so far. I can’t wait to wear the City jersey and start contributing on the pitch.”

Melbourne City, part of the City Football Group, have dominated the A-League Women’s competition since their debut in 2015, winning four championships and four premierships. They finished runners-up in the 2024 Grand Final and last season reached the AFC Women’s Champions League final.
