It is another World Cup qualifying campaign for Nigeria and in what is fast becoming a norm, the nerves are tense and the calculators are working overtime.

The Super Eagles, who once treated World Cup qualification as a routine exercise, now find themselves teetering on the edge.

On Tuesday night in Bloemfontein, they face South Africa in a contest that could make or break their hopes of reaching the 2026 World Cup.

The mathematics is simple, even if the emotions are not.

Only group winners qualify automatically. South Africa sit top of Group C with 16 points from seven games, while Nigeria lag behind in third on 10. With just three games left, every second, every touch, and every decision matters.

For coach Eric Chelle, the challenge is daunting: beat a confident Bafana Bafana side on their turf, or risk watching the dream slip away. Fortunately, he has a handful of players who can tilt the balance.

Here are the five Super Eagles stars, handpicked by Soccernet.ng, who could turn Bloemfontein into Nigerian territory.

1. Tolu Arokodare

Sometimes destiny sneaks up on you. Tolu Arokodare, a striker with just one competitive cap before this weekend, suddenly finds himself thrust into Nigeria’s most important game in years.

With Victor Osimhen sidelined after hobbling off against Rwanda, Arokodare entered the fray and, six minutes later, headed in the winner. It was a debut home goal that carried the weight of a nation. Nigerians, who feared doom without Osimhen, suddenly dared to believe again.

Arokodare isn’t just tall and strong; he’s fearless. He cannot be bullied by defenders nor cowed by hostile crowds. His movement unsettles opponents, and he thrives on service into the box.

South Africa beware: this is not a stopgap, this is a statement striker. If chances fall his way, the new Wolves signing will take them.

2. Alex Iwobi

For Alex Iwobi, this is personal. He was at the 2018 World Cup, felt the crushing disappointment of missing out in 2022, and knows better than most what another failure would mean.

Against Rwanda, he was tireless: threading passes, covering spaces, snapping into tackles. It was one of his finest displays in a Super Eagles shirt. Yet it also looked like a warm-up for something bigger, maybe a showdown with Bafana Bafana.

Iwobi is Nigeria’s most reliable creative outlet. From deep, he can dictate tempo, launch attacks, and keep the team ticking. His energy and leadership will be vital in the midfield battle. If Nigeria are to win in Bloemfontein, expect Iwobi to be at the heart of everything.

3. Christantus Uche

Few players bring as much intrigue as Christantus Uche. Absent against Rwanda due to late transfer deadline day business where he swapped Getafe for Crystal Palace, Uche is fresh, hungry, and impossible to ignore.

Uche is the kind of player coaches dream of. He can be a striker, midfielder, or even defender, all while looking like he was born to play there. He combines intelligence with physical strength, and his work rate is relentless.

For Chelle, he is the joker in the deck, the player who allows tactical flexibility. Nigeria will need warriors in Bloemfontein, and Uche’s qualities and versatility makes him a priceless weapon. Whether starting or coming off the bench, he could tilt the game in Nigeria’s favour.

4. Stanley Nwabali

If Nigeria are to pull off an upset, Stanley Nwabali must deliver the performance of his life.

The 29-year-old goalkeeper, who plies his trade in South Africa with Chippa United, knows the opposition well. He understands their forwards, their habits, their weaknesses. That familiarity could prove decisive.

Nwabali has been erratic at times, balancing brilliance with rash decisions. But when focused, he is commanding; marshalling his defence, claiming crosses, and pulling off spectacular saves.

Against South Africa, he will need to be flawless. A clean sheet could be half the battle won. Nwabali, on his day, is the wall Nigeria desperately need.

5. Ademola Lookman

Ademola Lookman’s story has been messy of late. He asked Atalanta for a move to Inter, went on strike when it was denied, and found himself frozen out before being recalled for the Champions League. Against Rwanda, he finally returned to competitive action.

Rust? None. He played with fire in his belly, relentlessly attacking, pressing, and nearly scoring. Only desperate Rwandan defending stopped him from finding the net.

Now comes South Africa, a side less likely to sit deep. That means space – and space is Lookman’s playground. He is, after all, the reigning African Footballer of the Year. This is his stage, his moment to remind everyone why he wears that crown.
