Washington Spirit have recalled Nigerian midfielder Deborah Abiodun from her loan at Dallas Trinity, cutting short what had been an eye-catching stint in Texas, Soccernet.ng reports.

Both clubs confirmed the decision on Tuesday, with Spirit moving to bring back the 21-year-old four months earlier than planned as they gear up for the decisive run-in of the 2025 NWSL campaign.

Abiodun, who signed a three-year deal with Spirit before heading out on loan, featured prominently for Dallas, making 12 appearances and starting seven matches.

The Super Falcons ace accumulated more than 650 minutes of action, including a full 90-minute display in the club’s 2-1 victory over Spokane FC at the Cotton Bowl on August 23.

Her recall comes just weeks after she played a key role in Nigeria’s triumph at the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations, further enhancing her reputation as one of Africa’s brightest midfield talents.

Why Washington Spirit return for Nigeria’s Abiodun?

Washington Spirit interim general manager Nathan Minion hailed her return, saying:

“We’re thrilled to bring Deb back to the Spirit as we approach the home stretch of the 2025 season. After following her impressive performances with Dallas and Nigeria this year, we know Deb will fit very well with this team and help us accomplish our goals.”

Born in Ibadan, Abiodun rose to prominence during her time at the University of Pittsburgh, where she became one of the standout players in collegiate football.

Abiodun announced herself on the global stage at the 2022 FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup, before earning call-ups for Nigeria’s 2023 Women’s World Cup squad and the 2024 Paris Olympics.

Her commanding midfield presence was central to the Super Falcons’ WAFCON-winning run earlier this year.

While her early departure leaves Dallas Trinity without one of their most influential players ahead of a crucial fixture against Brooklyn FC on August 30, Spirit are expected to reintegrate her immediately.

The Nigerian international could make her second debut for the Washington side on August 31 when they host Chicago Stars FC in their annual Pride Match at Audi Field.
