Exclusive: Medical red flags plus Allegri’s veto leave Boniface’s AC Milan move in jeopardy

Super Eagles striker Victor Boniface’s dream move to AC Milan has stalled dramatically after medical concerns and lack of support from within the Rossoneri camp left the deal hanging by a thread, Soccernet.ng can exclusively report.

Boniface looked set to swap Bayer Leverkusen for the San Siro in what was structured as a €5m loan deal with a €30m option to buy.

The Nigerian forward had already agreed to personal terms, while Milan even prepared the iconic No.22 shirt—once worn by Brazilian legend Kaka—for his unveiling.

Medical Red Flags

However, the move began to unravel during medical examinations in Milan. After initial checks at the Centro Ambrosiano, Boniface was referred to the Galeazzi Orthopaedic Institute, where doctors flagged issues with his right knee.

Italian journalist Marco Guidi of Gazzetta dello Sport confirmed to Soccernet.ng that the knee was “not 100% fit”, which has forced Milan to delay any decision.

He added that one possible solution was to renegotiate the loan fee with Leverkusen, even making it free, but stressed that “the problems in the medical exams are confirmed.”

Allegri’s Objection

Compounding matters, Soccernet.ng understands that AC Milan manager Massimiliano Allegri was not in favour of the transfer.

While Milan’s directors, including Igli Tare, were impressed with Boniface’s performances in the Bundesliga, Allegri reportedly expressed concerns over the striker’s injury record and long-term reliability.

Growing Doubts in Milan

Respected transfer expert Fabrizio Romano reported that Boniface has already returned to Germany after spending 48 hours in Milan, awaiting the club’s final decision.

Belgian journalist Sacha Tavolieri also revealed that following the scans and doctors' opinions, AC Milan have decided not to sign the Nigerian attacker.

Milan’s hesitation is understandable. Boniface has endured two anterior cruciate ligament injuries in his career and suffered recurring groin problems at Leverkusen.

What Next for Boniface?

Boniface, per multiple reports, has returned to Bayer Leverkusen, where new manager Erik ten Hag is not believed to have him in his plans, which would potentially limit his game time in Germany.

As earlier reported by Soccernet, if Boniface were to return to Milan, it would be on a term that would see Leverkusen lowering their terms.
