Super Eagles striker Taiwo Awoniyi has made a significant move off the pitch by acquiring majority ownership of the Kwara Kiddies League, a grassroots football initiative in his home state, Soccernet.ng reports.

The Nottingham Forest forward, 27, has now positioned himself as a key figure in youth football development in Nigeria, while emphasising his personal connection to the cause.

In an official statement released on Tuesday, Awoniyi expressed the depth of his emotional investment in the project.

“This is a project that’s very close to my heart,” Awoniyi said. “I am happy to share that I have officially become the majority shareholder of the Kwara Kiddies League.”

Originally a sponsor in 2024, Awoniyi has now deepened his involvement by securing 50% ownership of the league. With this new role, he also assumes the position of Chairman, taking an active hand in shaping the project’s future direction.

“In 2024, I came on board as a sponsor, and now I’ve taken a bigger step by owning 50% of the league. That means I now serve as the Chairman, and I’m more involved than ever in shaping its future.”

For Awoniyi, this isn’t just about investment. It's about legacy. Growing up in Kwara himself, the striker reflected on how football helped him overcome the limitations of his environment.

“Growing up in Kwara, football gave me purpose. It taught me discipline, kept me focused, and helped me dream beyond my environment. I know what this game can do for a young boy with little more than hope and heart — because I was that boy.”

The goal for the former Union Berlin striker is not merely to identify future football stars, but to help young boys find direction and build character through sport.

“That’s why I’ve chosen to invest in the Kwara Kiddies League. I want to help create a clear path for young talent in our state — not just to make it in football, but by helping young boys find direction, discipline, and purpose through the game.”

Awoniyi also acknowledged the contributions of those who have supported the league’s growth so far.

“Thank you to everyone who has supported this vision so far, especially the Kwara YEG League team and all our local partners. I truly believe we’re building something special together.”

He issued a passionate call to others in a position to give back, urging them to use football as a tool for positive change.

“I also want to encourage others — in Kwara, across Nigeria, and beyond — to keep finding ways to support young men in our communities. Football is powerful. It opens doors, shapes lives, and gives purpose. Let’s keep using it to build a stronger future.”

The striker concluded with optimism, hinting at a much larger vision ahead.

“This is just the beginning. I’m excited for what we’re creating and even more excited for the lives it will impact.”

Awoniyi’s commitment to youth empowerment through football has not gone unnoticed. He was recently honoured with the Professional Footballers’ Association (PFA) Community Champion award for the 2024–25 season.
