Nigerian midfield gem Lucky Clement joins FC Midtjylland: Can he follow Onyeka & Onyedika’s path?

FC Midtjylland have added another promising Nigerian name to their books, announcing the signing of 18-year-old midfield talent Lucky Clement from their long-term partner club, FC Ebedei, Soccernet.ng reports.

The Danish side, famed for its eye for Nigerian talent, has already successfully launched the European careers of Paul Onuachu, Frank Onyeka, and Raphael Onyedika — all of whom began their journeys at Ebedei before making their mark in Denmark and beyond. Now, Lucky Clement has been tipped to follow in their footsteps.

Lucky Clement has signed on to feature for Midtjylland’s U19 team for the upcoming campaign, a side widely regarded as one of Denmark’s finest at youth level. And if early impressions are anything to go by, FC Midtjylland may have unearthed another gem.

“He’s exactly the type of defensive midfielder we look for at Midtjylland,” said Jonas Dal, the club’s head of Nigerian operations.

“Behind the smile you see on Lucky, there is a tough player. He’s strong in the tackle, relentless in pressing, and he can distribute the ball. He makes others around him better. He allows his teammates to make mistakes because he’s always ready to clean up after them.”

Born and raised in the rugged terrain of Jalingo in North-eastern Nigeria, Clement's playing style is as gritty as his roots.

“Jalingo is far removed from the comfort we know here in Denmark,” Dal explained. “We saw many good players there, but Lucky Clement stood out. His aggression, intelligence, and the way he shielded the defence was special.”

For Clement, the move to Midtjylland marks a significant moment in a journey that began years ago.

And Midtjylland aren't the only European club betting on emerging Nigerian talent — French side Reims signed teenage striker Hafiz Umar Ibrahim last summer and he's since made 14 first-team appearances.

What Lucky Clement said after joining FC Midtjylland

“It’s huge for me to come to FC Midtjylland,” he said.

“I first heard about the club a long time ago, and now I’ve signed for them. My biggest dream is to make it into the first team, but I know it will take a lot of hard work. That starts now. I have to improve every single day if I want to achieve that.”

Initially, the Nigerian teenager will focus on cementing a place in the U19 starting XI — a target he’s approaching with determination.

“As Jonas says, things don’t happen by themselves,” Clement added.

“It’s about keeping your nose in the groove and working hard. I look up to Raphael Onyedika — he plays the same position I do, and he does everything I want to do on the pitch. If he could do it, so can I.”

With a growing legacy of Nigerian midfield excellence at FC Midtjylland, Clement is stepping into a lineage of grit, intelligence, and quiet dominance.

Whether he can live up to the standard remains to be seen, but the early signs are more than encouraging.
