Nigeria’s Flying Eagles will lock horns with their Nigerien counterparts in the semifinal of the ongoing WAFU B U20 Championship in Ghana.

The clash is set to take place at the Ghanaman Soccer Centre of Excellence in Prampram, with a spot in the final on the line.

This fixture is a repeat of last year’s semifinal at the same competition, where Nigeria triumphed 3-1 to book their ticket to the U20 AFCON.

How Nigeria reached the semifinals

The Flying Eagles topped Group A, finishing ahead of hosts Ghana and Benin Republic with four points from two matches. Group A consisted of only three teams, meaning each side played twice.

Nigeria began their campaign with a 1-1 draw against Ghana after coming from behind. Their second outing was a commanding 4-1 comeback win over Benin Republic, having conceded first to a stunning free-kick.

Ghana edged Benin 1-0 in the final group match, but Nigeria’s superior goal difference ensured they finished as group leaders.

How Niger made the last four

Niger progressed from a tough Group B as runners-up, also with four points but from three matches.

Drawn alongside Cote d’Ivoire, Burkina Faso, and Togo, Niger began with a narrow 1-0 win over Togo, before suffering a 1-0 loss to Ivory Coast.

Head-to-head: Nigeria vs Niger

Nigeria have enjoyed recent success against Niger at U20 level.

In 2019, Niger hosted the U20 AFCON but were eliminated by the Flying Eagles in the quarterfinals via a 1-0 defeat — a result that also sealed Nigeria’s qualification for the FIFA U20 World Cup in Poland.

More recently, in 2024, the Flying Eagles defeated Niger 3-1 in the WAFU B semifinals to punch their ticket to this year’s U20 AFCON.
