Super Falcons and Al-Ittihad ladies defender, Ashleigh Megan Plumptre, has revealed why she rolls up her sleeves whenever she's in action for the Nigerian Football team, Soccernet.ng reports.

The 27-year-old played for England at youth level before switching allegiance to represent Nigeria in 2021, making her debut the following year.

When in action for the nine-time African Champions, the former Leicester City full-back rolls up her jersey sleeves to her shoulder level, and the action has sparked the interest of fans.

Plumptre revealed she rolls her sleeves simply because of the hot conditions whenever she plays, an act she's been used to since her time at the University of Southern California.

Plumptre has emerged as one of the standout defenders of the WAFCON 2024, earning her spot in the Team of the Group Stage.

She's keen on leading Nigeria to become African Champions for the 10th time, making the collective dream of Mission X possible.

What playing for Nigeria means to Plumptre

After making the WAFCON 2024 team of the Group Stage, the England-born Nigerian promised to give her all whenever she wears the green and white colours for the Super Falcons.

“My biggest growth as a player has come from my growth as a person. I don’t feel like I have to prove myself anymore. I just want to be present for the team and give my all,” Plumptre told CAFOnline.com.

“I have full trust in the team and what we’re capable of. I’ve felt such an emotional connection with this squad, and to be able to share these moments with them is something that I will forever be grateful for.”

“Playing for Nigeria means everything to me. I’ve always been proud of my roots, and being able to represent that on the field is something I carry with a lot of honour.

“I’ve faced injuries, moments of doubt, and changes in environment, but I’ve always leaned on my values — being kind, working hard, and staying grounded. That’s what keeps me going.

“Football is part of who I am, but what motivates me is knowing that I can inspire others, especially young girls who look like me or come from similar backgrounds,” the ex-Notts County defender added.

Additionally, the Super Falcons left-back revealed her plans to inspire a new generation of footballers in Nigeria by putting her coaching skills to the test.

“I’ve also started working toward my UEFA coaching license. I want to remain in the game, pass on what I’ve learned, and help shape the next generation — especially in Nigeria. That’s something I’m very passionate about.”

Plumptre will be in action for Justin Madugu's side this evening when they take on South Africa in the WAFCON 2024 semi-final.
