Man United, Benfica set to hijack Chelsea’s record move for Nigerian talent

Nigeria and Motor Lublin star Bright Ede on the radar of Chelsea and Arsenal

Premier League rivals Manchester United and Chelsea are set to battle it out for one of Europe’s most promising young defenders, Bright Ede.

Bright Ede, 18, has emerged as the subject of the latest transfer tug-of-war between the two Premier League giants.

The teenager with Nigerian and Polish roots is currently with Polish club Motor Lublin but he has drawn attention from scouts across Europe following a meteoric rise over the past few months.

Ede, a composed and ball-playing centre-back, is also attracting interest from Portuguese powerhouse Benfica, according to Onet, making this a genuine three-way contest for the player’s signature.

Motor Lublin are reportedly holding out for a fee of €11 million, a potential record for a sale from the Polish top flight.

Born in Warsaw and having started his football journey at Delta Warsaw, Ede joined Motor Lublin earlier this year for just €100,000 from Zagłębie Lubin's reserve side. In a short span, he has impressed enough to earn first-team appearances and ignite the interest of heavyweight clubs. Despite only making six senior appearances and scoring once, the buzz around him continues to grow.

Manchester United, renowned for nurturing emerging talent like Kobbie Mainoo and Alejandro Garnacho, are believed to see Ede as part of their long-term rebuild. The Red Devils reportedly sent scouts to observe the youngster during a recent Motor Lublin training camp in Sochocin and a fixture against Arka Gdynia.

Chelsea, however, had long been considered front-runners. Under the Todd Boehly-led BlueCo regime, the West London club has adopted an aggressive youth recruitment policy, already signing South American starlets Estevao Willian and Kendry Paez. Ede fits perfectly into their model.

But Chelsea's focus on the Club World Cup, which the Londoners won, momentarily delayed talks, allowing rivals United to steal a March on Ede with their proactive approach. Benfica, though, remain in the shadows, quietly monitoring the situation with intent.

For Motor Lublin, selling Ede would not only break the Ekstraklasa’s outgoing transfer record but also mark a transformative moment for the club. With a modest annual budget of around €8 million, the €11 million windfall would be a seismic boost.

Motor have already begun life-after-Ede planning, recruiting 18-year-old German centre-back Paskal Meyer from Holstein Kiel.

Ede may not yet be ready for Premier League action, but he could be a smart acquisition for clubs looking to invest in tomorrow’s elite
