Rumours have been swirling about a possible move to Mexico's Pumas UNAM for Super Eagles attacker, Kelechi Iheanacho.

Soccernet.ng understands that no official talks have taken place between the Nigerian striker and Pumas UNAM, despite multiple media reports suggesting an imminent transfer.

The Super Eagles forward joined Spanish La Liga side Sevilla last summer on a two-year deal after leaving Leicester City as a free agent.

However, his time in Spain has not gone according to plan. Struggling for minutes and consistency, Iheanacho was sent out on loan to English Championship side Middlesbrough during the second half of last season. He scored just once and added one assist in 15 appearances.

Following the end of that short stint, the 28-year-old returned to Sevilla for pre-season training under new head coach Matías Almeyda. But speculation about his future reignited after reports claimed that Mexican giants Pumas UNAM were on the verge of completing a deal for the Nigerian international.

However, sources at Africafoot have denied those claims, revealing that no formal discussions have taken place between the two parties.

While Pumas UNAM are reportedly interested in the striker, their interest has not been formalised, and no offer has been tabled.

That means, at least for now, Iheanacho remains a Sevilla player, and no exit is imminent.

Iheanacho turns 29 in October and is under increasing pressure to secure regular playing time in the Super Eagles squad ahead of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations in December.

With competition fierce among Nigeria’s attackers, a lack of minutes could hurt his chances of making the final squad.

While a move to Mexico would represent a step down from Europe’s top leagues, it could offer Iheanacho the game time he desperately needs. But until formal talks begin, talk of a Mexican escape remains a rumour.
