“I don't want to counter the opponent, I want to impose my philosophy” – Eric Chelle
Super Eagles head coach Eric Chelle has weighed in on one of football’s most debated managerial rivalry – Pep Guardiola versus José Mourinho – and revealed which of the two coaching legends he leans toward in terms of philosophy.
Guardiola and Mourinho are two of the most successful coaches in the history of the game, winning titles in multiple countries.
In a candid interview with Onze Mondial, Chelle unpacked the core differences between Guardiola’s possession-driven methodology and Mourinho’s pragmatic, opponent-specific tactics.
With five matches under his belt as Super Eagles coach — three wins and two draws — Eric Chelle’s influence is beginning to take shape.
More Chelle philosophy is presently being instilled in the Super Eagles B preparing for the African Nations Championship.
Chelle equally led the Super Eagles to win the invitational Unity Cup in London, following wins over Ghana and Jamaica.
And it’s no surprise that the 46-year-old has aligned his tactical beliefs with the innovative and expressive approach made famous by the likes of Guardiola and the Red Bull coaching model.
“Some coaches adapt their tactics to their opponent, like Mourinho — they try to find the opponent's weaknesses and counter them,” Chelle explained.
“Then you have coaches like Guardiola who want to impose their style of play. And you have others, like the Red Bull model, based on a transitional game with high pressing.”
Positioning himself somewhere between Guardiola and the Red Bull philosophy, Chelle added:
“I don't want to counter the opponent. I want to impose my game and my philosophy.”

The former Mali head coach, who is the first non-Nigerian African to manage any Super Eagles setup, further elaborated on his preferred formation: the 4-4-2 diamond. It’s a tactical choice aimed at controlling the midfield through numerical superiority and unpredictability.
“I like the 4-4-2 diamond formation. I like playing with two strikers and having numerical superiority in midfield,” he said.
“There aren’t many teams that use the diamond, so it gives us an advantage.”
Chelle, whose work has received praise from Moses Simon, also emphasised the importance of player roles and movement over rigid formations.
Using Pep Guardiola’s Barcelona — with Lionel Messi frequently dropping deep — as an example, Chelle argued that formations are often fluid depending on player interpretation.
“You can start in a 4-3-3, but the movement of your striker can transform it into a diamond. What really matters is the animation and the profile of your players,” he noted.
“There’s no perfect system. The system must suit your players. It's their movement that fuels it.”
Chelle’s nuanced understanding of tactics could be crucial in guiding Nigeria through the upcoming CHAN tournament and beyond.
With World Cup qualifiers against Rwanda and South Africa coming in September, the Super Eagles B tactician will hope to translate his Guardiola-inspired vision into wins and a ticket to the Mundial.
