Five takeaways for Nigeria as Arokodare lifts Super Eagles to ruin Russia’s perfect run in Moscow

Nigeria Super Eagles

They weren’t supposed to survive. Not in that atmosphere. Not against that record.

But in the cold heart of Moscow, under the weight of Russia’s jaw-dropping seven-game winning streak and their absurd 36-0 aggregate run, Nigeria’s Super Eagles dug deep to deliver a performance full of character, grit, and glimpses of the future.

Friday’s 1-1 draw at the Luzhniki Stadium wasn’t just a result — it was a message.

Against one of Europe’s most in-form teams, Nigeria showed they are not to be underestimated.

And amid the wild backdrop of tactical tweaks, standout saves, and a moment of sheer composure from Tolu Arokodare, Eric Chelle’s men gave fans plenty to chew on.

Here are five big takeaways from a dramatic night in Moscow.

1. Okoye’s redemption arc gains momentum

Maduka Okoye has walked a tightrope in Nigerian football circles for the past few years — lauded one moment, questioned the next. But in Moscow, he answered the doubters with calm authority.

The Udinese shot-stopper was everything Chelle needed him to be: alert, vocal, composed. His late double save — first parrying a deflected cross, then denying Dmitriy Barinov from close range — was the kind of clutch moment that wins admiration in dressing rooms and selection meetings.

While Nigeria conceded once (through Ajayi’s own goal), Okoye was not to blame. Instead, he emerged as one of the night’s most composed figures, showing that when it really matters, he can be counted on.

For Chelle, who is still evaluating his best XI, this felt like a big audition passed.

2. Onyeka turns up when it matters most

Frank Onyeka may not always grab headlines, but his performance against Russia was a masterclass in midfield disruption. Deployed in a slightly more advanced role than usual, the Brentford man brought bite, brains, and relentless energy.

He broke up play with well-timed tackles, closed passing lanes, and helped spring counters — none more important than the sequence that led to Fisayo Dele-Bashiru’s golden first-half chance. Onyeka’s intelligent movement and link-up play also gave Nigeria a foothold in midfield when Russia were threatening to overrun them.

With Wilfred Ndidi’s availability still uncertain and Alex Iwobi often drifting wide, Onyeka’s form could be pivotal for Nigeria going into a packed international calendar.

3. Arokodare comes clutch and claims his moment

Sometimes, you only need one moment. One lapse. One chance.

When PSG’s keeper made an uncharacteristic error with a misplaced pass, Tolu Arokodare was alive to it. The Genk striker took a touch, steadied himself, and slotted home with ice in his veins.

More than just a maiden goal, it was a big-man performance from a player who’s often been on the fringes of public conversation around Nigeria’s striking options.

With Victor Boniface struggling to impact the game, Arokodare’s directness and composure stood out.

He nearly added a second with a towering header late on. For a player still trying to define his place in this Super Eagles generation, this was the perfect launchpad.

4. Super Eagles bring Russia’s proud run to a screeching halt

Make no mistake: this wasn’t just any draw.

This was the first time Russia had conceded a goal in two full years. Their last seven games? Seven wins. Thirty-six goals scored. Zero conceded. This was a team playing with ruthless swagger, especially on home soil.

That Nigeria were the ones to end that streak, on a freezing night in Moscow, in front of a hostile crowd, adds serious weight to this result.

Arokodare's cool finish wasn’t just a personal milestone — it was a dagger to a record Russia were fiercely proud of.

The psychological boost this gives Nigeria is enormous. It's not often you halt a European juggernaut in full flight. For Chelle and his players, this wasn’t just a result to respect, it’s one to rally around.

5. This is a result to build on

Bright Osayi-Samuel was culpable in the opening goal. Semi Ajayi conceded an own goal. On the opposite flank, Uche was better going forward than tracking back. And Bruno Onyemaechi had to survive a few nervy moments.

In short, Nigeria still have a lot of work to do in defence.

Russia targeted both flanks, repeatedly isolating Nigeria’s wide defenders in 1v1s.

It’s a tactical trend Nigeria must resolve if they want to compete consistently at top level. Whether that means dipping into the local pool, recalling experienced names, or testing younger legs from the local scene, something has to give.

Still, if this is the problem area, then it’s fixable.

What Friday’s draw showed is that Nigeria have the spine: Okoye in goal, William Troost-Ekong at the back, Onyeka and Onyedika in midfield, and options up top. The building blocks are there.

This was supposed to be Russia’s night — the continuation of a fearsome run at home, the silencing of critics. Instead, it turned into Nigeria’s proving ground.

They arrived in Moscow underdogs and left with belief. Arokodare announced himself. Okoye reminded us of his quality. Onyeka anchored the midfield like a general. And Eric Chelle? He might just be finding his groove at the perfect time.

There are miles to go before this Super Eagles side becomes the finished article. But in the fog of Luzhniki, they escaped without a scratch — and left with their heads held high.
