Genk striker Tolu Arokodare has fired back at critics who dismissed the Unity Cup as a minor tournament following Nigeria’s dramatic penalty shootout win over Jamaica, Soccernet.ng reports.

The Super Eagles held their nerve to edge the Reggae Boyz 5-4 on penalties after a thrilling 2-2 draw in regulation time, with the Bayern Munich target among the players who converted from the spot.

Taking to his social media after the final whistle, Arokodare responded to those who downplayed the importance of the friendly competition.

“Say I no go win anything this season. If you like, make una call am backyard tournament. Cup nah cup,” the 24-year-old posted.

Arokodare’s comment appears to be a defiant response to critics who had written off his season following a trophyless campaign with Genk in Belgium.

Despite limited minutes in the tournament, Arokodare made his mark off the bench and confidently slotted home his penalty during the shootout, helping Nigeria clinch the Unity Cup title.

Nigeria had earlier defeated Ghana in the Jollof Derby before overcoming Jamaica in the final, securing back-to-back wins and providing head coach Eric Chelle with a morale-boosting start to his tenure.

For Arokodare, it may not be the Champions League — but a trophy in national colours is still worth celebrating.
