Akor Adams: Sevilla make key decision on injured Nigerian forward

Sevilla have made a definitive decision on Nigerian forward Akor Adams: the 24-year-old will be the club’s main centre-forward for the upcoming 2025/26 campaign, Soccernet.ng reports.

This is despite Adams enduring an underwhelming start to life in Andalusia, a six-month period marked by injury and limited appearances.

Adams arrived at the Ramón Sánchez Pizjuán in January 2025 from French side Montpellier in a €5.5 million move engineered by former sporting director Víctor Orta.

Yet the Nigerian’s debut season has been plagued by fitness setbacks, restricting him to just 131 minutes of action in La Liga and a single full outing — a 90-minute appearance against Atlético Madrid.

Sevilla set to gamble on Akor Adams

However, with a summer of change expected at Sevilla and financial constraints limiting new arrivals, the club has resolved to give Adams a fresh chance, according to AS.

Though Orta has now departed, the striker has a contract until 2029 and remains part of Sevilla’s long-term planning.

Despite barely getting a consistent run due to successive injuries, Adams is expected to play a prominent role under the club’s next head coach — with Imanol Alguacil and other names being considered to replace Joaquín Caparrós.

The Benue-born striker’s path to Spain has been anything but conventional. A former Nigeria U20 international, Adams left Jamba Football Academy in 2018 to join Norwegian outfit Sogndal. After overcoming injury setbacks, he moved to Lillestrøm in December 2021, where his 23 goals in 38 league appearances across two seasons caught the attention of top European scouts.

Montpellier secured his signature in the summer of 2023. Though he impressed initially in Ligue 1, scoring 11 goals across a season and a half, Adams struggled for consistency and was eventually snapped up by Sevilla, who were in need of attacking reinforcement.

Now, with Isaac Romero and Peque also vying for a place in Sevilla’s attack, Adams is set to lead the line in a make-or-break season. The club is hopeful that a fully fit pre-season and clean bill of health will finally allow the talented Nigerian to fulfil his promise in La Liga.
