Mission isn’t over yet — Zubairu, Gusau warn Flying Eagles after Nigeria beat Senegal to book World Cup spot

Nigeria's Flying Eagles

President of the Nigeria Football Federation Alhaji Ibrahim Musa Gusau and Flying Eagles head coach Aliyu Zubairu have set their sights on the U20 Africa Cup of Nations trophy, Soccernet.ng reports.

Nigeria’s Flying Eagles secured a dramatic victory over defending champions Senegal on Monday night to book their place in the semi-finals of the CAF U-20 Africa Cup of Nations and seal qualification for the 2025 FIFA U-20 World Cup in Chile.

After a tense 120 minutes ended goalless at the Suez Canal Stadium in Ismailia, the encounter was decided by penalties, where Nigeria held their nerve to triumph 3-1 in the shootout.

Goalkeeper Ebenezer Harcourt emerged as the hero, saving two spot-kicks and keeping the Flying Eagles in the hunt for a record-extending eighth African title.

“We trained for this moment. Every possible scenario was prepared for — including penalties. The boys stuck to the plan and executed it when it mattered the most. That’s what champions do,” head coach Aliyu Zubairu said after the match.

Zubairu, who guided his team through the group stages unbeaten, praised the squad’s growth and composure but stressed the job is not yet complete.

“This is a big win for Nigeria, but we are not celebrating yet,” he added.

“We came here with a goal — to qualify for the World Cup and challenge for the title. One box is ticked, now we keep pushing. They’ve matured through every game — tactically, mentally, emotionally. That’s the true development path, and I’m proud of every single one of them.”

The Flying Eagles showed resilience against a well-organised Senegalese side. Harcourt made a vital save from Ibrahima Dieng in the 54th minute, and although the Lion Cubs hit the woodwork twice, they couldn’t break down Nigeria’s disciplined defence.

Nigeria created chances of their own, especially in the final stretch of regular time, with Divine Oliseh, Kparobo Arierhi and substitute Precious Benjamin all going close. In extra time, Tahir Maigana and Israel Ayuma both tested Senegal goalkeeper Mouhamed Sissokho with long-range efforts.

In the shootout, Harcourt denied Pierre Diatta Dorival and another Senegalese player before Ousmane Konate fired his effort against the post. Precious Benjamin, Emmanuel Chukwu and Israel Ayuma converted for Nigeria.

It is a win that delights NFF President Alhaji Ibrahim Musa Gusau. Still, Gusau insists more is expected of the Flying Eagles.

He told the NFF website: “The ticket to the World Cup was the first objective and we have achieved that. The second objective is to win the trophy… I have reminded them that the country is waiting for them to bring the trophy back home.”

The Flying Eagles will face South Africa in the semifinal of the U20 AFCON after the Amajitas defeated DR Congo 1-0 in their quarterfinal clash.
