English Championship club West Bromwich Albion could offer Semi Ajayi a one-year contract extension amid talks that he could leave the club this summer, Soccernet.ng reports.

Ajayi has been at West Brom since 2019, but it has been a topsy-turvy time for him so far. He was one of the best legs at the Hawthorns, helping the team gain promotion to the Premier League.

Unfortunately, he could not help them stay afloat in the top flight in the following season, as the club got relegated. Since then, Ajayi has struggled to reach his best mainly due to injuries.

Since the 2021/22 season, the former Arsenal man has missed a quarter of West Brom's Championship games at least. But last season was the worst. Ajayi featured in only 15 of the Baggies' 46 league games.

Due to his problems and his age, there have been talks that West Brom are looking to move the 31-year-old defender on in the summer. The club narrowly missed out on a playoff place and are looking to get some reinforcements and get some players off their books to mount a better promotion challenge next season.

Ajayi has been linked with a transfer to Hull City and Reading recently, but nothing concrete has emerged so far.

However, in a new development, per DOOD, West Brom are considering offering Ajayi a one-year contract extension, but he would have to take a wage cut.

The Super Eagles star earns around £850k yearly, but this would drop significantly if he agrees to stay at the club.

What is the best option for Semi Ajayi?

Injuries have dealt Semi Ajayi a bad blow as he has regressed in recent years. As such, he is not that attractive to the top clubs in the Championship.

Moreover, if he had to leave West Brom for any other club, he would still have to take a pay cut. So, staying with West Brom and taking a slight pay cut might be a good idea, especially as the club looks good enough to fight for promotion.

On the other hand, Ajayi is on the other side of 30, so it will be understandable if his next move is influenced by the paycheck. If a Saudi Arabian or Qatari club comes calling, it would not be a bad idea if he says goodbye to England.
