President Federation Cup: Giantkillers Abakaliki FC continue fairytale run as Ikorodu City & Rangers reach semifinal

President Federation Cup

Ikorodu City and Enugu Rangers have secured their places in the semifinals of the 2025 President Federation Cup after a thrilling round of quarterfinal fixtures, Soccernet.ng reports.

Ikorodu City, the Lagos-based Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) side, edged out Wikki Tourists 1-0 in Abuja, despite being reduced to 10 men.

Shola Adelani’s composed second-half penalty proved decisive, while the Oga Boys showed impressive defensive grit after Leonard Ngenge was sent off shortly after the hour mark. The victory is a historic moment for Ikorodu City, who are reaching the final four for the first time since their formation.

Enugu Rangers, one of the competition’s most storied clubs, also progressed with a narrow 1-0 win over Plateau United.

Chidozie Okorie’s well-taken goal in the first half was enough to send the Flying Antelopes through. The six-time champions now stand just two matches away from another FA Cup triumph.

In Enugu, Kwara United came from behind twice to overcome 2017 champions Akwa United.

Akwa struck through Endurance Ebedebiri and Emmanuel Ini, but Wasiu Alalade netted twice to level proceedings. After a goalless extra time, Kwara held their nerve in the penalty shootout, winning 5-3 to book their semifinal spot.

There was more drama in the final quarterfinal fixture, where Nigeria National League side Abakaliki FC stunned NPFL outfit Nasarawa United.

The underdogs held their own in a 1-1 draw during regulation time and completed the upset with a 5-4 win on penalties, sending shockwaves through the competition.

Abakaliki FC’s win comes on the heels of their shock 2-0 victory over two-time CAF Champions League winners Enyimba FC in the Round of 16.

With the quarterfinals wrapped up, attention now turns to the semifinal showdowns set to take place in two weeks.

Ikorodu City will face Abakaliki FC in what promises to be a captivating clash between two cup dreamers, while Kwara United take on Rangers International in a battle of top-tier heavyweights.

The President Federation Cup is Nigeria’s premier knockout football tournament, featuring 74 teams from across the 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory.

Defending champions El-Kanemi Warriors claimed their third title last year, while Shooting Stars remain the most successful club in the competition’s history with eight titles.
