Nigeria vs Kenya: How the Flying Eagles can avoid a slip-up in U-20 AFCON final group game

The Flying Eagles face Kenya in their final Group B match of the 2025 U-20 Africa Cup of Nations, with a place in the knockout rounds on the line, Soccernet.ng reports.

Following a hard-fought goalless draw against Morocco and an earlier 1-0 win over Tunisia, Nigeria sits level on four points with the North Africans, but their qualification is far from sealed.

As they prepare to square off against bottom-placed Kenya, Aliyu Zubairu’s boys must be cautious to avoid an upset that could derail their campaign.

Key ways the Flying Eagles can avoid a slip-up:

1. Maintain Defensive Discipline

Daniel Bameyi, Emmanuel Chukwu, and the rest of the Nigerian backline have been solid so far, with two clean sheets in as many games.

That defensive organisation must continue against a Kenyan side desperate to salvage some pride. Avoiding unnecessary risks at the back will be crucial.

2. Take Chances in Front of Goal

Despite creating opportunities in previous games, the Flying Eagles have scored just once in the tournament.

They must improve their finishing, with players like Precious Benjamin, Clinton Jephta, and Auwal ibrahim expected to step up in the final third. Converting early chances could ease the pressure and open up the game.

3. Control the Midfield

The trio of Ibrahim, Isreal Ayuma, and Divine Oliseh need to win the midfield battle. Against Morocco, Nigeria struggled at times to hold possession. A more composed midfield performance will allow them to limit Kenya’s attacking opportunities.

4. Avoid Complacency

Facing a team without a win might tempt the Flying Eagles to take their foot off the gas, but that would be dangerous. Kenya have nothing to lose and could play with freedom. Nigeria must approach the game with respect for the opponent.

5. Utilise Set-Pieces Effectively

Nigeria have earned several free-kicks and corners in the tournament, but their set-piece execution has lacked sharpness.

Improving this aspect could provide the breakthrough, especially in tightly contested matches where open-play chances are few.
