Two Super Eagles stars join Bayern Munich, Freiburg men on Bundesliga’s best tacklers, passers list

Two Super Eagles stars, Frank Onyeka and Kevin Akpoguma, have earned recognition in the Bundesliga this season, ranking among the league’s top players in key statistical areas, Soccernet.ng reports.

Onyeka, currently on loan at Augsburg from Brentford, has been a standout performer in midfield, placing among the Bundesliga’s best tacklers.

Meanwhile, Hoffenheim’s Akpoguma has emerged as one of the division’s most efficient passers.

According to a report by Euro Football Rumours, Onyeka ranks 27th among the league’s top 50 tacklers, having registered 39 tackles in 22 Bundesliga appearances this season.

The 27-year-old has accumulated 1,842 minutes of action, proving his tenacity in the middle of the park.

Leading the league’s tackle charts is Hoffenheim’s Tom Bischof with 81 tackles, followed by Werder Bremen’s Senne Lynen (58), Heidenheim’s Benedikt Gimber (56), Stuttgart’s Maximilian Mittelstädt (55), and Freiburg’s Ritsu Doan (52).

While Onyeka’s combative style has been crucial for Augsburg, his contributions extend beyond defensive duties. The Nigerian midfielder has also registered one assist in the Bundesliga and another in the DFB-Pokal.

His strong displays in Germany have not gone unnoticed, with Super Eagles head coach Eric Chelle including him in Nigeria’s provisional squad for this month’s FIFA World Cup qualifiers.

While Onyeka has impressed defensively, Akpoguma has demonstrated his composure and accuracy on the ball.

The Hoffenheim defender ranks 40th among the Bundesliga’s top passers, having completed 1,026 passes across 24 league appearances this season.

Bayern Munich’s Joshua Kimmich leads the passing charts with 2,459 completed passes, followed by his teammate Min-Jae Kim (2,268), Bayer Leverkusen’s Granit Xhaka (2,034), Stuttgart’s Angelo Stiller (1,833), and Bayern’s Dayot Upamecano (1,808).

Despite his impressive passing statistics, Akpoguma has yet to register a goal or an assist this term—a trend that has continued from his last two seasons.

His most productive campaign came in 2021/22, when he contributed two goals and two assists in 26 Bundesliga games for Hoffenheim.

However, the 29-year-old defender was left out of Eric Chelle’s provisional squad for Nigeria’s upcoming World Cup qualifiers later this month.

With both Onyeka and Akpoguma making their mark in Germany, their performances could play a key role in shaping their club and international futures in the months ahead.
