Goalkeeper: Stanley Nwabali retains the gloves in Nigeria goal
Nigeria’s goalkeeping position has seen instability in recent years, but one man has brought a measure of calm — Stanley Nwabali.
The Chippa United shot-stopper was outstanding at the Africa Cup of Nations last year, displaying confidence, composure, and excellent shot-stopping ability.
Chelle’s decision is a straightforward one. With the other goalkeepers — Amas Obasogie and Kayode Bankole — yet to earn a senior cap, Nwabali will remain Nigeria’s No. 1, providing a reassuring presence behind the defence.
Defence: A familiar core with tactical tweaks?
With Semi Ajayi injured and Gabriel Osho absent from the squad, Chelle must make key decisions in defence. But given the magnitude of the fixture, he is unlikely to gamble on untested players.
William Troost-Ekong, the most valuable player at the 2023 AFCON, is the natural leader at the back.
He will likely be paired with Calvin Bassey, whose aggressive defending and ability to play out from the back make him a crucial asset.
Premier League's finest and Nottingham Forest ace Ola Aina remains a guaranteed starter at right-back, providing both defensive stability and attacking thrust. On the left, Bruno Onyemaechi is the most natural choice, though Bassey could shift out wide if necessary.
If the situation requires that Chelle uses a three-man defence, he might consider introducing Igoh Ogbu or Jordan Torunarigha. However, with limited training sessions, a back four seems the safer bet.
Midfield: A fine balance between solidity and creativity
Midfield is where Chelle’s tactical decisions could make the biggest impact.
Nigeria’s past struggles have often come from a lack of midfield control, and Chelle must ensure his side is not overrun in the middle of the park.
Wilfred Ndidi is the engine, breaking up opposition attacks and providing a screen for the defence. Alex Iwobi will be tasked with linking midfield to attack, using his vision and passing ability to unlock Rwanda’s defence.
Raphael Onyedika offers defensive discipline and box-to-box energy, though Alhassan Yusuf could stake a claim after impressing at AFCON.
Chelle could be tempted to deploy a diamond midfield, as he did with Mali, but in this high-stakes game, a 4-3-3 formation is more likely.
This structure allows Nigeria to play to their attacking strengths while maintaining a solid defensive base.
Attack: Osimhen and Lookman lead Nigeria’s charge
Nigeria’s biggest strength lies in its attack, and Chelle’s biggest challenge will be selecting the right combination to break down Rwanda’s defensive block.
Victor Osimhen, 2023 African Footballer of the Year, is the first name on the team sheet. His pace, power, and lethal finishing make him Nigeria’s ultimate weapon.
Ademola Lookman, Atalanta's hero and Africa's crown prince, is equally indispensable. His dribbling, movement, and eye for goal make him a nightmare for defenders.
It is, however, in the right-wing forward role that Chelle has a key decision to make. Moses Simon has been one of the most consistent Nigerians in European football, but he is far more effective on the left — Lookman’s natural position.
Samuel Chukwueze, though struggling for form, is a better fit on the right. Chelle may opt to start Simon in a less familiar right-forward role, given his experience and work rate.
