She began her professional career with AS Saint-Étienne before moving to UDG Tenerife in Spain’s Liga F. Her journey has also seen her make a significant impact on the international stage, representing Nigeria at major tournaments, including the FIFA Women’s World Cup and the Olympics.

AFC Toronto Sporting Director Billy Wilson expressed his enthusiasm for the signing, highlighting Okoronkwo’s versatility and technical ability.

“We are delighted to welcome a player of Esther’s quality to Toronto. She is a player we identified and tracked for some time, and we believe she has all the necessary attributes to be a genuine difference-maker,” Wilson said.

“Most comfortable as a centre forward, Esther’s technical and physical qualities allow her to occupy various positions, which she demonstrated on the highest stages. She is a fantastic addition to our roster, and I am sure our supporters will relish the opportunity to watch her represent the city during this new chapter.”

Since making her debut for Nigeria in 2021, Okoronkwo has established herself as a key player for the Super Falcons.

She announced her arrival with a decisive first international goal, securing a 1-0 away victory against Ivory Coast in the 2022 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) qualifiers. Her goal, assisted by Michelle Alozie, ensured Nigeria’s passage to the tournament with a 3-0 aggregate win.

Okoronkwo was also part of the Super Falcons squad at the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup, where she played a crucial role in helping Nigeria reach the Round of 16.

The former St Etienne star came off the bench twice in the group stage, playing a part in Nigeria’s impressive 0-0 draw against Canada and their thrilling 3-2 victory over Australia. The forward was later called up for the 2024 Paris Olympics, featuring in a challenging group against Brazil, Spain, and Japan.

A new challenge for Okoronkwo in Canada

Okoronkwo is now set to embark on a fresh challenge in Canada as AFC Toronto prepare for its historic debut season in the NSL.

The forward expressed her excitement about joining the club and playing in a league that aims to elevate women’s football in North America.

“I’m so thrilled to join AFC Toronto for the inaugural Northern Super League season and to have the opportunity to play in Canada. It’s really exciting to be part of something historic,” said Okoronkwo.

“I’m looking forward to discovering the city, but most of all, I can’t wait to help AFC Toronto score goals and push the club to the top of the standings!”

Okoronkwo has seven goals in 17 appearances for Nigeria.
