Gasperini’s harsh words: Should Ademola Lookman consider a move away from Atalanta?

Super Eagles forward, Ademola Lookman, has been one of Atalanta’s standout performers, especially in the 2023-24 season, where he delivered a stellar performance, Soccernet.ng reports.

This moment came in the UEFA Europa League final, where he single-handedly secured Atalanta’s first-ever European trophy with a stunning hat-trick against Bayer Leverkusen.

Following this achievement, Lookman was placed 14th in the Ballon d’Or rankings and was crowned the 2024 CAF Player of the Year, where he succeeded Victor Osimhen.

Despite his contributions, Lookman recently found himself under heavy public criticism from Atalanta manager Gian Piero Gasperini following a missed penalty in the Europa League tie against Club Brugge.

Gasperini’s blunt comments saw him refer to Lookman as “one of the worst penalty takers” he had seen. That has sparked a mixed reaction, and questions on the Nigerian’s future at the club.

Is Lookman a Player in Demand?

Lookman’s performances have not gone unnoticed. In the just-concluded January transfer window, he attracted interest from top clubs like Paris Saint-Germain and Manchester United, both of whom were keen on bolstering their attacking options.

While Atalanta managed to keep hold of him, Gasperini’s harsh words could revive fresh speculation over his future at the Gewiss Stadium.

At 27, Lookman is entering the prime of his career. His impressive performance for his club and country makes him a potentially valuable asset for any top European side looking to bolster their squad with his signature.

If he is not fully appreciated at Atalanta, a move to a bigger club where his talent is valued might be the next logical step.

Is It Time for Lookman to Move On?

Lookman has given everything to Atalanta, and his performances have helped fire the club’s status to the top in European football.

However, rather than having a private discussion with Lookman, Gasperini’s public criticism suggests a lack of appreciation for what he brings to the team.

With clubs like PSG and Manchester United previously showing interest, Lookman might need to reassess his future if Atalanta do not show him the respect he deserves.
