South Africa, Nigeria end 2024 with defeats as Banyana Banyana stumble ahead of WAFCON defence

South Africa Banyana Banyana

South Africa’s Banyana Banyana suffered a 3-2 defeat to Jamaica in their final international match of 2024, mirroring Nigeria’s loss to France just days earlier, Soccernet.ng reports.

The five-goal thriller in Montego Bay on Monday night saw coach Desiree Ellis’ side surrender a first-half lead as they continue preparations to defend their Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) crown next year.

Linda Motlhalo gave South Africa the lead in the 19th minute, capitalising on a well-executed team move.

The visitors dominated the first half, neutralising Jamaican star Khadija Shaw to preserve their 1-0 advantage at halftime.

However, Jamaica equalised in the 58th minute through Vyan Sampson, taking advantage of defensive lapses after Shaw was substituted.

Drew Spence’s clinical finish in the 63rd minute put the Reggae Girlz ahead before McKenna extended their lead to 3-1 in the 76th minute, capitalising on another South African error.

Amogelang Motau pulled one back for South Africa in stoppage time following a rare Jamaican defensive mistake, but it was too late for a comeback.

Banyana Banyana now shift focus to their WAFCON title defence in Morocco, starting July 5, 2025.

The Super Falcons of Nigeria, nine-time WAFCON champions, will also aim to reclaim their crown after losing their last match of 2024, a 2-1 defeat to France in Angers.

Ifeoma Onumonu scored Nigeria’s only goal, while goalkeeper Chiamaka Nnadozie shone in the absence of key players like Asisat Oshoala and Rasheedat Ajibade.

With WAFCON fast approaching, South Africa and Nigeria will look to iron out their weaknesses as they prepare for an intense battle for continental supremacy.
