Former Super Eagles and Inter Milan striker, Obafemi Martins, has heaped praise on Ademola Lookman after the Atalanta striker won the African Footballer of the Year award, Soccernet.ng reports.
Lookman set the tone for his CAF POTY campaign early in 2024 with a good display at the AFCON 2023 tournament where he scored three goals as the Super Eagles reached the final only to fall short to Ivory Coast.
Nonetheless, he built on his initial velocity and led Atalanta to the Coppa Italia final against Juventus where they lost. He got the last laugh in Dublin as he scored a hat-trick in the UEFA Europa League final against an unbeaten Bayer 04 Leverkusen to gift La Dea her first silverware.
His consistency for club and country saw him rightly claim the 2024 CAF Player of the Year award in Morocco on Monday, and Martins likened the former Everton man to himself, tipping him to make a move to the English Premier League.
“He’s one of my favourite players as well. My favourite striker because everytime I watch him, I just think about me and the way I used to play, but he’s probably better with the techniques and everything. He knows how to score goals as well, so I’m very happy for him and I think he can do better.
The way he plays, he can play in the top teams in Premier League like Arsenal, Liverpool, Manchester United. I don’t know about Chelsea,” the former Newcastle United striker said in an interview with Livescore.
Paris Saint-Germain, Liverpool, and Manchester United have been rumoured to be in talks for the ex-Leicester City forward, but his preferred destination is currently unknown.
