Arsenal legend Ian Wright has heaped praise on Super Eagles and Nottingham Forest defender Ola Aina, recognising his stellar performances since returning to English football, Soccernet.ng reports.
Born in London, Aina honed his skills at Chelsea’s renowned academy, spending 12 years with the Blues and playing a pivotal role in their youth team’s dominance.
During his time at the club, Aina helped Chelsea clinch major titles, including the Barclays U21 Premier League in 2014, the FA Youth Cup twice, and the UEFA Youth League in back to back seasons.
Despite his early promise, Aina left Chelsea initially on loan in 2018 and later permanently to join Torino in Italy.
He had a brief stint back in England during a loan spell with Fulham in 2020 before making a permanent return last summer, signing for Nottingham Forest on a free transfer.
The 28-year-old defender has been a revelation at the City Ground, helping Forest avoid relegation last season and contributing to their solid form this term.
With 28 points already accumulated from matches played so far, Forest are just four points shy of their total from last season.
Ian Wright recently singled out Aina for his impact at Forest, naming him his “Vibes Player of the Year” for 2024.
Speaking on the Wrighty’s House Podcast as per NottinghamForest News, the Arsenal legend said:
“I’m going to go with Ola Aina at Forest. I remember watching him at the youth team at Chelsea; he was one of those great youth team players they had with Chalobah and Dominic Solanke.
“He seems to still play with the same vibrance that he had then. He’s got great energy, lots of pace; he’s left foot, right foot, so I’m going to say him. I get good vibes off of him.”
Forest now face a critical decision regarding Aina’s future, as the defender is currently on a one-year deal.
With his versatility — capable of playing in both full-back positions — and his consistently strong performances, extending his contract is imperative.
According to the Athletic, Nottingham Forest are in advanced discussions with full-back Ola Aina over a new contract.
The 28-year-old Nigeria international’s current deal runs out in the summer, meaning he will be free to negotiate with overseas clubs from January.
