Nigerian forward Tolu Arokodare expressed his pride and praised Ghanaian winger Christopher Bonsu Baah following their performances in KRC Genk's well-earned 2-0 away win over KAA Gent on Sunday, Soccernet.ng reports.
Arokodare’s goal, set up by Bonsu Baah, proved pivotal as Genk ended Super Sunday with another valuable three points, strengthening their position at the top of Belgium’s First Division A.
The first half was a tightly contested affair, but Arokodare broke the deadlock just one minute into the second half, connecting with a pinpoint cross from 19-year-old Bonsu Baah.
It marked Arokodare’s eighth goal in as many league games, reclaiming his place at the top of the league’s scoring charts.
Reflecting on the victory, Arokodare couldn’t hide his satisfaction, saying,
“I’m standing here with a super proud feeling. We took control of the game from the first minute. Gent were forced to retreat.”
Arokodare revealed that the team had set a clear strategy at half-time, focusing on taking an early lead after the break.
“We agreed at half-time that we wanted to score the opening goal quickly,” he explained. “Thanks to a great pass from Bonsu Baah, we managed to do that.”
The Nigerian also noted the similarity between his goal against Gent and his recent strike against STVV, commenting,
“We train very hard for this, and it’s good that it worked out during the match.”
Arokodare credited his wingers, Bonsu Baah and Jarne Steuckers, for their quality deliveries, adding,
“It’s good for strikers like me that we have wingers like Bonsu and Jarne. They’re both very talented and often drop the ball in the box.”
Genk manager Thorsten Fink also shared his delight over the win, describing it as “perhaps our best game of the season.”
He highlighted his team’s discipline and control throughout the match, noting,
“We basically dominated the entire match. Our defence is making good progress. We hardly gave away any chances. We have to confirm this now.”
Looking ahead, Fink emphasised the significance of Genk’s upcoming Croky Cup match against Beveren.
“It is important that we continue this line-up on Wednesday,” he said. “We will make some adjustments because we have a lot of talent in our selection. It is up to those players to seize their chance.”
He added, “The Croky Cup remains the fastest route to European football, and we take this competition very seriously.”
With nine wins and one draw in their first 12 league matches, Genk lead the standings with 28 points, holding a five-point advantage over their nearest rivals, Royal Antwerp.
