Napoli’s Sporting Director, Giovanni Manna, has shed light on Victor Osimhen’s surprising season-long loan move to Galatasaray, Soccernet.ng reports.
Osimhen’s potential departure was one of the major talking points of the 2024 summer transfer window, with tensions brewing between Napoli, the Nigerian striker’s representatives, and various interested clubs.
Reflecting on the transfer, Manna revealed that although Napoli initially resisted the idea of a loan move, the timing of Turkey’s extended transfer window presented an opportunity that eventually suited all parties involved.
“It was an opportunity,” Manna explained. “The market was closed in Europe, and Galatasaray approached us as soon as our summer session ended. At first, we were hesitant, as similar proposals had surfaced throughout the window, but neither we nor Victor were keen on a loan. However, after discussions with the player, we found common ground, and the solution became satisfying for everyone. Of course, we would have preferred a sale, but it wasn’t feasible.”
Osimhen’s exit became more likely after Napoli secured the signing of Romelu Lukaku, essentially paving the way for the Nigerian forward to leave, especially considering his desire for a new challenge.
Since his move to Turkey, the Super Eagles star has swiftly adapted to life in Istanbul, impressing on his debut for Galatasaray against Rizespor at the RAMS Park.
Osimehen at Galatasaray is really incredible, fascinating, and encouraging most especially to young stars coming up. Osimehen is really great, and I strongly believe that he is going to do great in the club. I rate him as the most talented player of the year…
