Championship: Maja fires West Brom to victory against Wayne Rooney’s Plymouth
Josh Maja’s clinical strike ensured West Bromwich Albion continued their impressive form in the Sky Bet Championship with a narrow 1-0 win over Plymouth Argyle on Saturday, Soccernet.ng reports.
The victory saw Albion extend their unbeaten run and remain top of the table.
Maja, who has been a standout performer this season, netted the decisive goal in the 62nd minute, for his sixth goal of the campaign.
Plymouth, managed by Wayne Rooney, were hoping to repeat their shock win over previous leaders Sunderland but could not find a way past a resolute West Brom defence, marshalled by Nigeria’s Semi Ajayi.
West Brom’s solid defensive display secured their third consecutive clean sheet, reinforcing their position at the top of the Championship standings.
The Baggies have now claimed five wins in their first six matches under Carlos Corberán and look well-placed for promotion.
Their next challenge comes against Sheffield Wednesday, where they will aim to maintain their momentum.
Iwobi and Bassey star as Fulham defeat Newcastle
At Craven Cottage, Alex Iwobi and Calvin Bassey were instrumental as Fulham recorded a 3-1 victory over Newcastle United.
The win was Fulham’s first against Newcastle since 2017, ending a long winless streak against the Magpies.
Fulham’s attacking play was fluid, with Raul Jimenez opening the scoring in the fifth minute.
Iwobi, who joined Fulham from Everton in 2023, combined brilliantly with fellow Hale End Academy graduate Emile Smith-Rowe to score Fulham’s second goal with a composed finish in the 22nd minute, giving the hosts a comfortable lead at the break.
Newcastle responded early in the second half with Harvey Barnes scoring in the 46th minute, but Fulham’s defence held firm afterwards.
Reiss Nelson added a late third in stoppage time to seal the victory after Bruno Guimarães’ mistake.
Iwobi played the full match, while Bassey impressed with a solid defensive performance, as Fulham secured three vital points.
Solanke opens Spurs account in victory over Brentford
Dominic Solanke opened his Tottenham Hotspur goalscoring account in a 3-1 win over Brentford at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.
Brentford’s Bryan Mbeumo struck early, scoring within a minute, but Solanke equalised in the 8th minute, capitalising on a blocked shot from James Maddison.
Spurs gained control of the match when Brennan Johnson netted in the 28th minute, with Maddison adding a third late in the second half.
Solanke, signed for a club-record fee, was substituted in the 88th minute to a standing ovation, having silenced critics after a tough start to life in north London.
The win continues Tottenham’s strong start to the Premier League season under Ange Postecoglou.
