“It’s unfortunate”- Augustine Eguavoen denies quitting Super Eagles coaching role

Super Eagles interim coach Augustine Cerezo Eguavoen has denied reports that he has resigned from his position following the team's goalless draw with Rwanda on Tuesday, Soccernet.ng reports.

Eguavoen took over the Super Eagles job this month due to the Nigeria Football Federation's failure to get a new coach. The former Nigeria international is currently the technical director of the NFF, and he has had to take up the coaching role on interim basis on different occasions.

The last time he handled the Super Eagles was during the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations Qualifiers, where he led to team to the round of 16.

This time, Eguavoen had a great start to life as he led the Super Eagles to 3-0 victory over Benin in their first game of the 2025 AFCON Qualifiers last week.

Then, in his second game on Tuesday, he led the Super Eagles to a goalless draw against Rwanda in Kigali.

After the game in Kigali, reports emerged that Eguavoen had stepped down from his position in the Super Eagles.

However, the 59-year-old has debunked those reports, as he insists that he has to sit with the NFF to decide a next line of action.

“It’s quite unfortunate that people just trigger something that is not correct. And the situation we are in now, we don’t need negative stories,” Eguavoen said, per the cable.

“But when I saw that story (of his resignation), I was worried. Whatever people are reading out there is not correct.

“I’m still very much in charge. I’m the Technical Director of the NFF, saddled with the responsibility of taking the Super Eagles at this moment.”

The NFF have been slow in appointing a new coach since Finidi George was let go in June. With Eguavoen's recent results, it is very possible that he will lead the team to the next round of Qualifiers in October.
