Nigeria and Botev Plovdiv striker Anthony Ujah has named Augustine Eguavoen the perfect man for the Super Eagles coaching role, Soccernet.ng reports.
The 33-year-old forward got his first minutes for the Nigeria U-23 team under Eguavoen, before earning a senior cap under the late Stephen Okechukwu Keshi.
Ujah led the line for the Super Eagles during the 2013 FIFA Confederations Cup in Brazil, but couldn't help them to a semi-final spot after they fell to defeats against Uruguay and Spain.
Speaking on Brila FM’s No Holds Barred with retired Super Eagles star, Ifeanyi Udeze, the former Union Berlin striker shared his thoughts on the coaching situation of the Nigerian national team.
“The team is in a transitional phase, moving from coach José Peseiro to finding a new coach. Eguavoen as the interim manager is one thing I’m really happy about. I don’t know how long he’ll be there, but he’s a good man, and the players respect him. He’s not in Nigerian football by mistake. He has an aura about him, and the players listen to him without him needing to shout. If given the chance, he will bring the best out of the team. His instructions are clear, and he’s a nice person,” the former Mainz 05 striker aired.
The Super Eagles are yet to secure a win from four World Cup qualifying games, and the hopes of playing in the 2026 FIFA World Cup hang on by a thread, but Ujah's remains confident the team will qualify with Eguavoen in charge.
“Winning all the remaining matches will be difficult, but we don’t need to look back. If Eguavoen is given time, I believe he’ll do very well,” the Botev Plovdiv striker concluded.
Nigeria defeated the Republic of Benin and drew against Rwanda during the September international break under Augustine Eguavoen.
