Super Eagles midfielder Alex Iwobi is edging closer to breaking Kanu Nwankwo’s Premier League assist record following his standout performance in Fulham’s 3-1 victory over Newcastle at Craven Cottage, Soccernet.ng reports.
Iwobi played a pivotal role in the win, delivering a brilliant assist for new signing Emile Smith Rowe, marking his 31st Premier League assist.
The Nigerian international is now just two assists shy of surpassing the legendary Kanu, who was a key figure for Arsenal FC during his time in England, with a record of 33 assists.
Kanu made a mark in the Premier League with stints at Arsenal, West Bromwich Albion, and Portsmouth. Over his career, he contributed 33 assists and scored 54 goals in more than 270 appearances.
Kanu was also a central figure in Arsenal’s famous “Invincibles” squad that went unbeaten throughout the 2003-04 season, helping the Gunners win two Premier League titles and two FA Cups.
Iwobi, who, like Kanu, began his Premier League journey with Arsenal, has evolved into a versatile playmaker. After a stint at Everton, his recent move to Fulham has rejuvenated his form under manager Marco Silva.
To celebrate Fulham’s win over Newcastle, Iwobi indulged in a traditional Nigerian meal of semo and egusi, sharing his post-match recovery on social media, much to the delight of fans.
