Inside NFF’s surprising choice: Why Bruno Labbadia was chosen over Herve Renard and Janne Andersson

In a move that has surprised Nigerian football fans, the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has appointed Bruno Labbadia as the new head coach of the Super Eagles, Soccernet.ng reports.

The announcement comes two months after Finidi George’s resignation as head coach. Labbadia, who has been out of football action for 16 months following his departure from VfB Stuttgart in April 2023, has been selected to lead Nigeria’s national team to the 2026 World Cup and the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).

Coaches Linked with the Super Eagles Role

The NFF had been evaluating several high-profile candidates for the role. Former Ivorian national team coach Hervé Renard and ex-Swedish national team coach Janne Andersson were among the top contenders.

Andersson, who expressed interest in the position, acknowledged the opportunity to manage a prominent African team with significant talent.

“It’s a huge footballing nation. I can confirm that I have had a dialogue with the Nigeria Football Federation,” Andersson told Swedish newspaper Expressen.

Other candidates included Gustavo Poyet, Aitor Karanka, and Fabio Cannavaro, who were also interviewed by the NFF.

Why Labbadia Over Renard and Andersson?

According to BBC Africa, Andersson was initially considered the frontrunner, with plans for his compatriot Peter Wettergren to serve as his assistant.

However, Andersson’s availability was delayed until November due to personal commitments, despite his interest in the role.

Hervé Renard, although initially interested, was unable to finalize a contract due to other offers, prompting the NFF to explore alternative options.

As the Super Eagles’ next game approached in September, the NFF accelerated discussions with other candidates. Labbadia emerged as the chosen one due to his extensive managerial experience and UEFA Pro License. His previous roles include managing Hertha Berlin, Wolfsburg, Hamburg, and Bayer Leverkusen.

Labbadia’s first task will be to lead the Super Eagles in their 2025 AFCON qualifying match against Benin in September. The NFF hopes his appointment will bring fresh energy and success to the team’s campaign.
